I am going to be doing a cake similar to this one (white hydrangea cake):

Cake will be a BC square - no fondant.
GP hydrangea bunches on the side of the cake. What do you think is the best way to get the bunches of hydrangea to adhere on the side?
I am thinking wire the flowers, bundle together, tape. Insert straws into the sides of the cakes where bunches will be located; insert straw with a downwards angle. Insert bundled, taped stems (wires) into straws.
My other thought was not to wire them at all and glue GP flowers right to cake. But, I am at a loss on how to get the mounding effect.
I'd appreciate any and all input!
The full instructions on how to make the same cake is featured in UK magazine Cake Craft and Decoration July 2009. The fowers are made using mini hydrangea cutter. Half balls of modelling paste are stuck to the sides of the cake supported with cocktail sticks till set then flowers are secured on to them with RI creating dome shape. Hpe that make sense was trying to make the instuctions briefer than in the mag.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the picture... but I'd also use gum glue or RI in addition to the sticks for support.
