I've got a little girl who wants a monogrammed cake. She wants the 3 letters to stand up on the top of the cake. What is the best way to do this? Just make them free hand with gumpaste and stick them on top? Or use candy melts and pipe them and stand them up?
And finally... once they're made, how do I get them to stand up? If the letters are thin, I can't really put dowels or toothpick into them (or can I?) to stick them into the cake. So do I just stick the letter into the top of the cake by itself.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I usually make them out of a gumpaste rope, and stick a toothpick or two in the bottom. After it dries, just stick it on top! Sometimes, I use a fancy font in Word, make the letters really big, and print them out. Then, I can put wax paper over it and I have a guide to make the letters/numbers with.

HTH!

If you make the monogram more round than flat you can put a sucker stick or skewer in the bottom while drying, if it is flat you can "glue" it to the back with melted chocolate then roll out a thin piece of matching gumpaste or fondant and cut to fit cover the exposed stick . I have done that a lot it works great and looks finished! Good luck!
