Hi,

Have any of you ever used bulk cake mixes? There is a store in nashville (GFS) that sells a large box of cake mix that you can mix the whole thing or half and as a whole it makes 8 8" cakes. The box says that you only have to add water but also comes with directions for using eggs and oil. I'm leary of trying this because I don't have a mixer that will take that. Financially it's not that better of deal than buying DH cake mixes, but I am just curious if anyone has ever tried anything like this.

Well some of the big wholesale companies offer a bulk mix for large quantity baking..Some are really good...and some not so good....I calculated what the bag would be which was about $75.00 here from Dawn Foods...and how much it would make.It was caluclated that it would be cheaper to buy mixes like Betty Crocker or DH on sale.So that is what I do now..I wait until they are on sale for 3/$4.00 or rarely 10/$10.00 and then order several cases.The mix ends up being about 99 cents a box are slightly higher...and you get a better taste and consistency.JMO

At the school where I work we get in the big bags. I store them in airtight containers and then just measure out how much I need for the size of cake that I need. I am regularily making 16x24's but if I need a smaller cake I measure out how much a box weighs. Just make sure to sift them. It will make for a nicer cake.

some bulk mixes I've used are pretty good. I really didn't like the GFS brand. Really. I mean ...... REALLY ...... didn't like them.

They could be half the price of my regular stuff and I still wouldn't use it.

All taste is subjective and you may find its fine, or it may work well as a base for a doctored cake mix. I just didnt' like the taste or texture at ALL.

i looked into bulk cake mixes and it works out to be the same as the box in the long run. i look at it as the boxes will stay fresher being not opened until ready to use as the bulk will set open. and depending on the flavor how quickly will it be used?
