my dh made my cake for me last month...you should be able to view it in my gallery.
I was so surprised and thought he did a great job with no training.

I usually don't have a cake and if I do get one it is usually store bought. Although I love to make and decorate cakes, I am not much of a cake eater, so it actually is ok! icon_smile.gif

I can't remember the last time I got a birthday cake. My birthdays are usually no big deal to me. Also, I'm not a big cake eater, and usually like ice cream even less. I stay home with my daughter, so I don't even have co-workers to pawn extra cake off on.

This year's gonna be different, though. I made a strawberry cake with cream cheese icing this weekend, and it was so good I decided that's what I want for my birthday, even though it's still 2 months away. I'm running with my running club this year, and we usually have snacks after, so I'm making myself a cake since there will be lots of people to help eat it. I'll get to practice some techniques, and hopefully add a masterpiece to my portfolio, and maybe even get an order or 2.

I loved reading through the rest of this post. TinaRe, you are very lucky to have a hubby take the time to make a cake. I think it is so cute. I also noticed the whole leftie action. Is he an MP, too? If so, I think I need to have him get with my hubby who is one so that he can teach him his decorating skills-LOL!!

I make my own B-day cake too...
This yr. I just had a birthday and I made a chocolate cake, 2 layers, torted and filled with coconut pecan filling, iced with chocolate fudge icing.....I don't do a big deal for my birthdays and whoever pops in for a visit, they get a slice of cake, cup of coffee and ice cream if they want it...

thank you Tanya. He is a very caring man and isn't afraid to let it show like most men. Anyways, yes he was an MP in the Army, for 8 years to be exact. We left the Army in 2001 by the skin of our teeth. We got out just before the stop/loss the MP's had. He was at Ft. McCleallan, Al for basic and AIT, Korea ( camp Humphries), Ft Ritchie and Ft Dietrick, MD and then finally Ft Knox, Ky. Now he is a civilian Police Officer. We are now back in our home state! He loves watching me do cakes and even makes m bags and washes out the tips for me as I need them! HE's so good!

In our house my birthday is in the midst of six birthdays in 37 days (Feb 1 to Mar 9) so we get a little sick of cake. So my birthday cake is often an ice cream cake from DQ - Mmmmm! Last year, though, I'd just had our baby six days before my birthday so a friend who has just started cake decorating made a HUGE cake for me. It was lovely to get a decorated cake from someone else -- made me feel very special!

I would rather have peach cobbler or something like that. I don't know about you all, but I'm not much on eating cake anymore.

I made my own cake from birthdays 12-15... then my little sister was born 4 days before my 16th and I haven't had a birthday cake since! No point in having two, and I'd much rather make one special for her than have one for me. I guess you could say they're "ours", but my name isn't ever on them! (Oh, and I stopped getting gifts for my birthday that year, too... it's a good thing I love my sister icon_razz.gif )

I haven't made my own cake. My mom or my sis alwys gets me a strawberry shortcake. I'm not a big cake eater, either. I think they enjoy the cake more than I do.

well I got a cake this year for the first time in three years. My mom got it for me from walmart but I was so happy that someone had gotten me a cake I did not even care what it tasted like. Mom did go to some trouble by putting it on a nice platter and dressing it up with some fresh strawberries.

I've had so much fun reading these replies that I had to share my husbands last ditch effort about 18 years ago! He always fixes birthday dinner for me....this year early in our marriage..he forgot the cake mix when shopping. His substitute was orange jello in a ring mold...and he filled the "hole" in the center with chocolate pudding. Had to blow the candles out fast because they were melting the jello! UGH! Couldn't eat it. LOL!!!

My 2 daughters 16 & 13 made my cake this past year. I just so happens we were out of eggs, but they made the cake anyway. Well let's just say the cake wasn't eaten. It was the thought that counts anyway.

I MAKE MY OWN. MY MIL IS NOT VERY HAPPY ABOUT IT. SHE INSISTS ON GETTING ME ONE EVERY YEAR AND I ALWAYS TELL HER NO! I LIKE TO TRY DIFFERENT THINGS ON MY CAKE THAT I WOULDN'T TRY ON ANYBODY ELSE'S CAKE. IT IS MY PRACTICE CAKE FOR MY BIRTHDAY, IF IT DOESN'T TURN OUT GREAT, I SAY IT'S OK IT'S ONLY FOR ME! I WOULDN'T WANT IT ANY OTHER WAY!
