I want to make a Toy Story themed bed cake for my son's birthday coming up and while I've made bed frames out of gumpaste before I'd really like to use chocolate this time. Not chocolate clay but real melted/poured chocolate. What I don't know how to do is make a chocolate mold that large as I think it is too big for silicone putty. Any ideas? Thanks!

There are three ways you can go about creating a mold of a larger item while still capturing all of its detail:

  • 1. You can use an

Adjust-A-Mold Box, which is basically four pieces of acrylic that can be configured to make squares and rectangles of various sizes. Use CopyFlex to create the mold.

2. An appropriately sized food-storage container can be substituted for the Adjust-A-Mold Box. Use an X-Acto knife to cut off the bottom of the container, so you are left with just the sides. Then use Safe-D-Clay to secure the top of the container to your work surface. As in option 1, use CopyFlex to create the mold.

3. You can use Silicone Plastique in combination with Silicone Spread to make sure you capture all the details of the object. Youll want to brush on the Silicone Spread first, to get into all the nooks and crannies. Let it half-cure for about an hour, until its sticky but no longer paste-like. Then use Silicone Plastique to bulk up the mold. Theres a great tutorial by Marzipandoll here that will help you with this technique.

Wow, Dominic thanks so much for the tips. I think I could do a adjust a mold style thing with bed posts and a head board.
