What is the use of treacle in chocolate or fruit cakes? Can you do without?

Treacle in a fruitcake is a moisturizer. It helps retains moisture in the cake.

For a dark rich fruitcake, use molasses.
For a dark fruitcake, use golden syrup, dark jam or even melted chocolate.
For an ordinary fruitcake, use dark or light jam, coffee extract or just strong coffee [liquid].
For a light, golden or white fruitcake, use golden syrup* or honey.

*any type of syrup - rice, malt, sorghum etc
