So I'm going to be making cake for a six year old birthday party, and I have no idea what flavour of cake to do. I've been told to do anything but chocolate.

What flavours do you find that children seem to like? Which flavours would you consider a safe bet?

Hey, I find Banana is a popular choice for the non chocolate loving kids. Either that or a simple madeira. Good luck icon_cool.gif

fresh lemon and orange juice with the zest of both has been my best flavor with children.

What about yellow cake? Peanut butter or your own funfetti cake I think would be good too. icon_smile.gif

personally I like the sound of lemon & orange cake... YUM! But funfetti... I just googled it and WOW! That's gotta be such a good cake for kids. Would you just make any flavour cake you like and throw a bunch of coloured sprinkly things in there?

It's such a good idea.... any tips on making a funfetti cake?

They're kids. Anything with sugar and icing on it. If mom doesn't want chocolate (is it an allergy?) then make white or funfetti or any standard flavor.

they're kids. I'll bet none of them have a gourmet palate! icon_biggrin.gif

The younger kids seem to go for chocolate or vanilla cake with cookies & cream bc or vanilla or chocolate pudding. Seems the simplier the better with kids.

No allergies, one of the twins has decided he doesn't like chocolate is all. Even though apparently he hooked into a huge pile of easter eggs last year! I haven't had any experience with kids except my own 18 month old, so I'm still learning about kiddie palates icon_smile.gif For my son's first birthday I just made chocolate, thinking that was a safe bet. Thanks ladies, cookies & cream sounds interesting too, though vanilla funfetti just looks too cool, I bet none of them has seen one of those before.

I make a regular white cake and add about a half cup of rainbow sprinkles to the batter (stirred in by hand). Then bake according to the white cake recipe!!

I find the kids love the rainbow batter cake(yellow or vanilla cake) with batter dyed (red, green, blue, yellow for boys or blue, purple, pink, light green for girls). they love cutting in to the cake and seeing bright cake(vanilla frosting and lots of sprinkles).

have fun!

Cool idea!! And the colors wouldn't really affect the flavor, which I think is what the OP is asking about! cool!

Honestly if they don't like choc. vanilla (white or yellow) is safest from a flavor profile. My daughter is a give me choc. with choc. on it and my son is vanilla(with color not flavor, I tried strawberry cake flavor and he complained about that too). Plus they seem to love those sprinkles( or gummy bears which I just don't get on cake or ice cream) Too chewy.

I can't second this one enough! Standard yellow cake, nothing fancy, like Indydebi said, they're KIDS. But the colors are a HIT!!

Here's an example of a cake I made like this ... http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1753298/1753300

HTH!

I made a confetti cake in November for a friend's daughter's 4th birthday, and it was a hit. Just add 2-3 tbs of rainbow sprinkles to your regular white batter.
