Red Velvet mix?

Can anyone recommend a good red velvet cake mix? I have tried one... I believe it was DH, and I remember it not being as moist as I know red velvet should be. Any suggestions?

DH is the only mix i know of that has RV.

I suggest a scratch cake, this is one cake that i dont' think a mix can touch. (and i do box, modified box, and scratch recipes of multiple flavors)

Thats what I was thinking... but I'm trying to save on a project I have coming up. And you are right... nothing beats scratch red velvet. Thanks!

I use DH red velvet, but doctor it with buttermilk, red wine vinegar, white chocolate pudding and sour cream.

There's a red velvet redux recipe on this site that I'm going to try out next week. Has anyone ever tried it?

I use the DH mix all the time and find it very moist and tasty. I do add a box of chocolate pudding, use flavored coffee creamer or half & half instead of milk and an extra egg. Much easier in my opinion than scratch icon_smile.gif

I have the Ad Hoc RV Cake mix from Thomas Keller but I haven't tried it yet. It's pricey but I did try the chocolate cake mix and it was excellent. Everyone was asking me about it when I served it and I don't have that happen often with a straight mix (no doctoring).

How about "Mam Papaul's Red Velvet Cake", someone at the store told me it is really good. There are a few other fancy red velvet mixes too, like "Inna Garten" and "ad hoc". Ofcourse they cost more than DH, that is why I never tried any of those mixes.
In Texas you can get "Mam Papaul's ..." at almost any grocery store like HEB, Kroger and even at Cost Plus stores.
They sell "Inna Garten" at Sur La Table.
"ad hoc" cake mixes are available at Willimas sonoma stores.
If any one tries those mixes post back your opinion on how they are.

I recently fell in love with the WASC method to doctor mixes. The last red velvet I made I used this same method. DH mix, added sugar, flour....all that as normal. I also added about a 1/3 cup cocoa powder and a bottle of red food coloring.Loved it!
