I just have a few questions before making this large of a purchase -Does anyone out there know what the differences all are for the red Cricut and the Martha Stewart? And has anyone used the scratch gumpaste recipes in their Cricut machine? I'm trying to decide which one to buy and make sure it's worth the money. I see all other posts of Cricut have been blocked - trying to get info - hope this post is ok!

The red, original cricut cake is being replaced by the Martha Stewart one, so it's being discontinued. The other red one, the mini, is smaller and is limited by pieces that are 6" wide and 12" long. The only other machines aren't listed as being for cakes, but people have successfully used them to cut gumpaste or fondant.
As for what I've used in my machine...I have the mini and I used fondant mixed with some Tylose powder, so that's been my only experience.
Hope that helps!
None of them...lol! I've only used ( Cricut Cake ) mine twice since I bought it when it first came out. I'll sell it the first chance I get. In the end, it's a huge paper weight. I still prefer my exacto knife after all is said and done. The only difference between Martha's and the original Red is her name and color on it. Cricut polled everyone for a preference when it first hit the market. I wish I would have played with someone's first before I threw $400 away on the unit and accessories. To each their own, you may love it, I would suggest playing with someone else's first. IMO.
Sorry - also meant to ask if all cartridges are interchangeable with the Martha Stewart machine? It is a special on HSN today so I want to make sure before I order.
Thanks for all the info.
Yes the cartridges are interchangable. I love my cricut cake and use it all the time. There is a learning curve and takes practice to get it to work correctly.
I am still shopping for this item and I am confused - they are offering a "great price" on HSN today - and then I go to Amazon and it's over $100 cheaper - is this the same Martha Stewart Cricut machine? Even the cart. are 1/2 the price. Is this possible or is it a cheaper version - anyone out there know??
online_annie I agree with you....I have hated my Cricut Cake since I bought it...does not work at all to cut anything! I like my xacto knife as well! Under $5 vs. almost $400!!
I bought my cricut cake at JoAnns for $199.00. Not sure what it is selling for on HSN, but I think you shouls shop around for the best deal. JMHO
Well thanks for the tip on Joanns VickiC - not only is the unit on sale but the cartridges also!!

BTW, I love my cricut cake mini. I use frosting sheets and fondant.
I got the Martha version off Amazon. $199. Only difference from the red one (on Amazon) is the cartridge, Martha has a Martha cartridge, red one has cake basics.
The HSC one comes with 2 cartridges (cake basics and elegant cakes), as well as the Cricut software to make designs on your computer and print on the Cricut.
Design Studio, Cricut's software (in the HSC bundle), is not as good as Sure Cuts a Lot. Google each software or search these forums for more details.
I buy cartridges off ebay, WAY cheaper and free shipping.

Oh, all cartridges work with all Cricut machines. Just some are a little too detailed to really work well unless you make really large designs, and a few cartridges have come out that are geared more for cake and cutting clean gumpaste designs. I learned that by getting one cartridge that the designs have so many details it doesn't cut very well.
Tiggy2 - that is good to hear! Mine won't arrive for a few weeks - in the mean time I am 'playing' with gumpaste recommended by Linda McClure! I've been busy downloading 'dingbat fonts' because I think these will be great to use!
Intricate designs will work with the right product processed the right way. I have cut small, intricate designs and letters with no problem.
