From what I have ready about vanilla beans they will last a very long time if they are kept sealed. I think your vanilla extract could last many, many years. No need to worry about making too much. Or you can give it as gifts which I have started doing. Everyone loves my vanilla extract!

Earlier in the thread I talked about double extracting your beans. Don't bother. It's not as good as the first go round and you will be disappointed. Just stuff your spent beans and seeds into some sugar. Mix it up really well and you will have delicious vanilla sugar that you can use in your baked goods or drinks. It's really super yummy! I hope everyone who made their own vanilla extract was happy with the results. It truly is a wonderful experience!

I think I'm going to try this. Any particular Ebay seller y'all would recommend? There are so many of them and I would like to use a seller that has been known to deliver.

I just made some tonight for the first time! I put 25 beans in 750mls of Absolut Vodka, and I can't wait to see how it turns out! I got some free Tahitian beans, so put 8 of them in 1 cup of vodka in a mason jar so I can try both kinds.

I received my vanilla in the mail today!! I'm SO excited. I have my vodka ready, just need to find dark bottles. if not I guess I could use a mason jar.

I just open the bottle of vodka and cut the beans in half and also slice them open and insert in the same bottle. No bottle sterilization needed. Put in a dark place and use in about 3 months. You can move into smaller bottles later, if you want.

Thanks for the tip vpJane. I'm likely going to do as you suggested, as I can't seem to find dark bottles anywhere (unless I buy a product and dump the content).

I just used the vodka bottle as well, and am keeping it in the back of a cupboard. I shook it up today, and it's already gotten a lot darker!

I use clear mason jars with a towel on top. I put it out on a shelf to remember to shake it.

Does anyone know if Michaels, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby etc will carry bottles that you can fill up with vanilla extract? I am in Canada trying to find the best rate for purchasing bottles. Thanks.

Are you talking about decorative bottles for storing/gifting? Or are you talking about the big dark bottles for making the extract? I made some like others stated just using the vodka bottle itself and placing the vanilla beans in it. I put the vodka bottle in a brown paper bag and put it in the back of my cupboard.

BUT, I also purchased some cute smaller decorative bottles at Hobby Lobby for storing the extract and giving away as gifts after it is finished. Just make sure they are food safe. Some of the decorative bottles will say for decorative purposes only on the bottom.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am talking about bottles for storing the finished product and giving out as gifts. I did the same method as you, and just used the vodka bottle with vanilla beans inside. I will check out Hobby Lobby when i go down to the States.
