i am seriously considering going to school for baking/decorating cakes...was wondering if anyone knew of good schools or home programs or something like that...im in joplin missouri if anyone is from around here and knows of good schools close by...
You can also take Wilton classes at Hobby Lobby or Micheals. They aren't like the Wilton School in Chicago, but they are good place to start.
i thought about going to Tennessee and taking the SweetWise Courses...lol...don't know if i wanna move to do it though...
well maybe ill have to move to chicago...lol
Wilton's master course is only two weeks, no need to move there
If you're looking for a degree I would look at a pastry program. I once looked at going through the pastry program at the Culinary Institue of America. I think LeGordon Blu also has a pastry program. You'll get into more than just cakes, but you'll get a really good baking background.
To learn decorating you'll probably have to travel to learn from all the best, as most hold anywhere from 1-5 day classes on certain techniques. There isn't a degree program anywhere that I'm aware of for decorating. But there is a wealth of information here, maybe someone else knows something about a program out there.

I love living in TN.
I forgot to say that I would love to go to Chicago and take that class too.

when I decided I wanted to go into business for myself, but still needed training, I got a job as a pastry chef at a local bakery. I worked from 4am - 6pm six days a week, but I learned SO much and it didn't cost me anything! In fact, I made money while doing it!
I went to Culinary School at my Local Community College. Best Decision I ever made. Good luck!
I'm going to Pastry Arts School at a community college and I love it! Like Leily said, you get into more than just cakes, but it's a great foundation!
i am really thinking about going to the SweetWise classes because of their prices...only $45 a class...i know it will cost me more for gas to get there...but oh well...it is still cheaper than going to school...most of them were gonna cost like 7-10,000...idk...still aways off anyways maybe my mind will change...lol...thank you all for you input...oh and cupadeecakes...i love your BC recipe...
