Man ordered a cake for his son, nice guy, very easy going and basically said do whatever. He calls back and says son's favorite color is green and he is into music, dad is hoping his bassoon playing will land him a scholarship. I have limited time, it's a last minute cake and don't have time for all the details of a bassoon. How do I make something nice that is green iced with green borders that isn't Cake Wreck worthy? No clue. . .
I just did a search and put in music notes and bunches of ideas popped up. Do you have to actually incorporate the bassoon? Maybe a musical cake would be okay?
I would do a lighter sage green and just an outline of bassoon in black on top of the cake:

You can still do the music notes around the cake (cookie cutter profiles) or free-hand...
This way, you are meeting all the customer's requests...
what about doing an edible image plaque of him playing his bassoon and do it as a topper and have the wire sprays coming out from behind it and on them have musical notes. Have musical stuff around the side of the green colored cake. I did a cake last minute for someone that loved music but where I have pink put green. Just a thought!
Oh an here is the cake: http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1901536
I would definatley do sopmething like cakesrock said maybe a BCT or something with music notes or if not the BCT than maybe a person sitting on something paying the instrument (bassoon) maybe sitting on a big musical note, that's all I got. HTH
Great ideas and links, thank you! Only thing is I would not be able to get a photo in time and I do not have an edible image printer. . . .I didn't even think of a BCT, good idea. It's an 11x15, I don't want too much open space. . . I did tell him when we spoke that I'd put music notes on the sides, he liked that idea. I told him if I did a fondant piece on top that there was no way I would have time to put in so many details and he said that was fine, everyone would get the idea. Eh. . .hmm. . .lol.
Cakeandpartygirl, very clean cake. What size wire did you use? I hope I can find a music note cutter, not sure I have one. . . . if not, freehanding it is and that is a scary thought. . . I need some good juju sent for this cake!
I used the wire from ace of cakes line!! Yes I totally cheated. They are expensive (4.99 at Michaels) but I didn't have time to bend the wires.... ok ok I was truthfully to lazy to do it!! If you use a coupon which they have a 50% right now it will make it much cheaper. The cutter I used was a mini cookie cutter for the single note and for the other stuff I used my cricut (oops I cheated again)
