I thought it was closed up tightly, but I guess not. Now the gumpaste is hard and I need to make a figure like NOW!

Can I microwave it or what?

Make sure your hands are covered in shortening, too. That should help.

When Brown sugar gets rock hard, I place a slice of bread right in the bag with the brown sugar rock. Seal it and let sit overnight. (A soft, moist sandwich bread like Maiers Italian works great!) The sugar absorbs the moisture from the bread and is just like new. Think it's worth a try with gumpaste? This might not help immediately, but it might be worth a try in the furture... That's all I got!

Microwave it, add shortening and glycerine and knead it together.

I needed to make a poinsetta the other day and my gumpaste had pieces that was rock hard. I put it in the microwave for a few seconds and then kneaded it really well with shortening on my hand. It turned out great.

This is the cake.

Shortening definetely helps. If you have additional time you can put it in the fridge. I have also put hardened gumpaste in a tupperware container with a damp paper towel overnight (not touching). Make sure you have shortening on your hands when kneading if you do either of these two because it will be gooey!

I always 'peel' mine with a potato peeler to get rid of the crispy outside layer and use the inside.

I dealt with this last night. I got inspired to make some gumpaste figures and my gumpaste was rock hard. Microwaved it for a few seconds, kneeded with shortening and it was perfect! GL
