I've been wondering this for a while:
If someone designs a cake but the cake is made by someone else, who has the right to say the cake is 'theirs'? The designer or the maker?
Here are my thoughts... You can design cakes all day long (or attempt to copy the designs of others all day long), but unless you are a talented decorator that can successfully execute the design, it doesn't matter what you can dream up.
My answer... the decorator--the one that produces the end result.

Yes, I would agree. It's all in the execution.
I would say 50-50, yes the end result is important... but when the client gets the pretty cake that tastes pretty disgusting, then the decorator is out of jobs. So in my book they work hand in hand.
Remember how popular the Mississippi Mud Cake was (and still is)? It is not a pretty cake, but everyone loves how it tastes. The taste of the cake is what gets the decorator the job. You can be a fantastic artist, but if your cake is not worth the cost because it is nasty tasting...it is a one-time job...your reputation will be lost quickly if you do not have fantastic tasting cakes. Even the best decorators on those cake shows have huge flaws in them...so, if their cakes also have taste flaws, they will not last! (Especially if you live in a rural or small town area as I do...
The OP asked about designer or maker... I consider the decorator to be the maker/baker, but the designer is just someone with a pencil and an idea.
I think a little of both, leaning heavily towards the decorator.
My sister is a very talented artist that can design and draw amazing things. She can't decorate worth beans, so the end result and finish of a cake she might design would ultimately lay with me. She could draw a beautiful cake, but if she can't execute it then it's a wash.
