"Kayla, I like it but i think the white should actually be spray painted gold lightly not enough to cover it but just enough to add some how do you say "flare""
This was a comment left on my FB page by someone under my newest saints themed cake! LOL I appreciate all creative input, but not where everyone can see it! Should I respond by explaining that reason the cake was all black and white and one gold accent was to keep within a traditional elegance, and was it was not meant to be an over the top cake with the "flare" he is referring to? Or just leave it, or delete it? I know, I probably shouldn't even bother, but I am doing these cakes to build a portfolio and for the community to have the chance to see this grow into a business!

Sounds like someone left that comment to show how much smarter they are! People subconsciously sabotage others especially when they're jealous. It was very rude to put the comment there.

I would remove it if I were you. But send a direct message to the person who wrote it and thank them for their input and tell them the customer was very pleased with it's elegant simplicity and wouldn't have changed a thing!

LOL, I ended up responding with "Well, if you would like one done that way I will be more than happy to give you all the "flare" you can handle on one cake lol! icon_biggrin.gif", but I think maybe I should remove it too, its on my "future bakery" page, not my personal page!

Just to play devils advocate here, y putting something up on FB you are inviting comment, whether positive or negative, that is the nature of FB. All it is is the persons opinion. That said, it is your FB page, if you don't like it, remove it. It's up to you whether you want to get into it with the poster, if you started a FB page to showcase your cakes, leave it at that. Your cakes are lovely and speak for themselves.

I think you should write you are glad they like it, but your customer preferred a simple, but elegant look.

I had some one do that to me on FB. I am the Master of my FB page. I deleted it. They realized it and wanted to make SURE I saw their comment, they inboxed me. Every one is a critic. I am learning to ignore it. Now if only I can cut MYSELF some slack. I am my own worst critic.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like that comment was made maliciously or "to show how much smarter" the person was - but just some honest input.

Like pp said - when you post pictures on fb, they are open to comments. If you don't want input on your cakes, there is an option to disable the comments on your posts in the privacy settings.

Each person's taste is different and I didn't read teh comment as negative. My response would have been something like, "Oh great idea for the next one! I hope I get someone who wants one of those over the top cakes so I can give that a try! This client loved the simple elegance of this style, though, so I'm happy about that! thanks!"

Well I would remove the post once that person sees their post has been removed they will get the hint!!! I think the cake is awesome!

I don't know... I once had a 3-tiered topsy turvy cake put up on my FB, it's the kind with wedges inserted between the tiers. It was my first ever topsy turvy.

I had one friend commenting like "very beautiful cake, but it was crooked, maybe next time you can try better."

I laughed and responded that it WAS SUPPOSED to be crooked LOL.

Point is, not everyone leaves comments that may sound "malicious" to us with the same said intention. I would give that person the benefit of the doubt, explain the real situation, and move on.

SERIOUSLY....love the comment about the topsy turvy cake and it being a mistake. Laughing way too hard on that one!! You got to love them!!

I agree with several people on here, I don't think the person was trying to be ugly or negative.

I think the use of the word "actually" is what got me thinking she's not just making an observation of your work- she's making a correction.

But, if you're not offended then so much the better and you can let it roll off your back.

FB is the worst place ever if you are easily offended, especially if you allow the world and his wife access to your FB page. Up to now I have only had good comments on mine but some friends of mine have had some awful comments made to them. There are some very nasty people out there who like to hurt people and hide behind their PC screen to do it. Don't take any notice and keep creating your beautiful cakes.

I would say "Thanks for your comment _______! - The customer requested a minimalist look for this one." or something to that effect, and leave it at that. Or just delete their comment.

Do you think that comment might have been made tongue-in-cheek? I would probably think it was meant as a joke - ?

I would delete your reply and just let it be. If I read that, I would probably be compelled to add a complimentive comment of my own. Since it's your business page, you need to keep professional. I have the same thing & have had to remove some comments (someone actually posted a joke about some memorial cupcakes I did & I removed it due to the fact that I'm positive it wold have offended the customer who ordered them... quite shocking!) It's hard not to get ruffled feathers, but don't sweat it! You will be receiving other, more positive comments too & this one will be soemthing to laugh at (maybe not now...) =)

I have a cake picture on flickr that most people left nice comments about. But one person put "this is an U-G-L-Y cake!" I just replied by saying that everyone has the right to an opinion, and that quite understandably, my opinion went along the lines of the other comments.
