I have got the Agbay coming from DH and am so excited!

Made me wonder what everyone else would have on their wish list at this time of year.

Merry Christmas all!

I pretty much have every cake toy ever made icon_biggrin.gif so this year's wishlist is the Sugarveil system. In fact, I think that will be next year's big ticket item. icon_lol.gif

I want a gift certificate to Global Sugar...so I can go and browse and get some new toys!! Nothing specific though. Well, if I dream big, I would love an airbrush!!

Santa is being very good to me this year. I am getting a Cricut Cake and an airbrush set. (I am tempted to use the airbrush on a cake that I have due tomorrow. Shhhhhhhhh! Please don't tell.) icon_lol.gif Anyway ..... I am very excited about the new toys that I am getting.
Merry CHRISTmas to everyone!

wonderbuns - I highly recommend the Sugarveil product, but the kit is a cobbled together bunch of off the shelf stuff. It is completely overpriced and I am embarrassed to have been sucked in to purchase it. I also bought a Cricut which I find only useful on paper goods. The Sugarveil kit has been gathering dust for more than a year. But the product itself is really interesting to work with.

And before someone asks, no I don't want to sell it. I don't use it, but I'm keeingp it.

Thanks Leah! That's good to know. I was looking on their website and thinking of getting the lace kit -- a DVD, mat, a couple things to work the sugarveil with and five pounds of the stuff. (And maybe an extra lace mat too!) icon_biggrin.gif

I have a lot of my students asking me what they should buy right at the beginning and I tell them to invest in good quality things slowly. Start with cake pans, I recommend Magic Line brand. Get three sizes you know you will use (6 x 2, 8 x 2 and 10 x 2) I recommend getting two of each size. Round and square. Get spatulas that feel comfortable to your hand that you can work with (I like the wooden handled ones and avoid the large offset spatula like the plague!) icon_biggrin.gif I know what I can work with and what I cannot. If you are starting into wedding cakes, invest in an Agbay. If you are getting into fondant, invest in the PME tools (start with the basic kit first.) Things like that. Then slowly build up to whatever you need/want. (I wish someone had told me this before I bought every Wilton piece of junk out there and threw it all away a year later when I was first starting out!) icon_confused.gif Take it slowly (I know I know, much easier said than done.) But get quality stuff and you will end up saving lots of $$$ in the long run. Hope that helps! icon_biggrin.gif

I have a lb bag of Sugarveil which has been sitting in a box for 3 months...haven't opened it yet to play with, maybe because it's so expensive I don't want to waste it...!!

wonder, that stuff is good to experiment with. I thought you were thinking of buying the compressor kit. ::shakes head::

Actually I was... icon_redface.gif But I figured I'd start small, with the lace kit and maybe an extra lace mat. I do have her Dessert Garnishes DVD which is what sold me on the entire compressor and all the accessories, but perhaps I will hold off on that... icon_rolleyes.gificon_biggrin.gif

now see, this is what I tell hubby about buying my diamonds. I would rather get one REALLY NICE piece of diamond jewelry once every five years instead of once-a-year crippy crap pieces for 5 years.

Quality stuff only. And if we cant' afford it, then buy me a candle for Christmas. I'm perfectly happy with that! thumbs_up.gif

(And I've warned him that CZ's would (a) never land on my fingers and (b) would be sold to pay for the divorce attorney! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif )

So glad I found this thread - have a little christmas money from santa and didn't know what to spend it on - have the agbay and kopykake, have mixers...thought about an edible image system or cricut cake, but don't think I would use them enough to justify them since I just do this from home...wish I could find a sheeter for $300 bucks icon_wink.gif

Oh dear - looks like my Christmas list has got longer reading this list!

Just seen something else I really like the look of (must stop surfing caking shops in my down time!) the Beater Blade - basically a mixing blade that is pretty much the same as the KitchenAid mixing blade with a 'squeedgee' along the edges to make sure you mix right to the edges and don't have to keep stopping to scrape down - that would be so cool for makng royal icing etc! I think they also do them for other brands of mixers.

Those things are fabulous, I have them for my Kenwood mixers, they are lifesavers. Most of my recipes start with creaming butter and sugar and I used to HATE scraping the bowl down. I can't bake without them now. They get to the sides and bottom of the bowls when adjusted properly.

Sweetie, there are NO stupid questions!!! An Agbay is simply the BEST cake leveler ever made. It cuts through cakes like a hot knife through butter. They are expensive but WELL worth the money. Every year I buy one big ticket item and two years ago I bought my Agbay -- and it was well worth it just saving me aggravation!! icon_biggrin.gif

last year I used some christmas money to buy myself the beater blade and the sideswipe blade, but wasn't impressed with either of them - they aren't scraping the sides of my bowl like they promised - maybe I don't have the height adjusted right?

I don't know about other brands, but certainly with Kenwood mixers you usually have to adjust the height of the beater with a nut at the top, so it mixes properly at the bottom of the bowl. Even if you just took the beater out of the packet. This is for all the attachments, not just the silicone ones.

And another word about the Agbay. This is the cake tool you need. Pans first, 'cause you gotta bake. Agbay next. Before DVDs or books. Depend on YouTube for that stuff. Yes, the Agbay is expensive. Yes, it is totally, completely worth every penny. Ask all your family to pool the $ they were planning to spend on you and get it.
