I'm making a 2 tiered grad cake and want to put a graduation cap on top of the cake and am trying to figure out the best way to make the cap.. What would be the best way to make the flat part of the cap? should I just use a thick piece of fondant and let it dry or should I cover a thin board with fondant? Any suggestions? Thanks!

I took a square cake pan (4 or 6 inch depending on size of cake) and melted chocolate disks and poured about 1/4 inch and refridgerate. I made the top in a pyrex small, round bowl. I fill with chocolate, swirl & chill, add another layer, repeat and a third if necessary. Attach top to bottom with a little chocolate to seal. You can use white & color it. I used brown chocolate & colored it black. HTH

I am making the very same cake today. I am covering a cakeboard in fondant. I will use the Wilton ball pan for the rounded part of the hat and flatten the top a little bit before covering in fondant. That way the fondant-covered cake board will laying evenly on top.

I cut the square for the top and then a wide ribbon for the bottom(i fit it together to make the cap. I let everything dry and then attach. For the tassle I run the fondant through the pasta cutter. HTH
