I LOVE Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread, and while enjoying a peice of Nutella toast this morning, it hit me, THIS WOULD BE AN AWSEOME FLAVOR FOR CAKES!! Ok, so forgive me, I am new to baking if this has be done before, but anyone ever try using nutella in the cake, icing, or just use it as is as a filling? OR if you have like a chocolate-hazelnut recipe, please share because I am about to die to try some!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Yes! We use Nutella as a filling. It spreads beautifully. It tastes especially good with a chocolate icing.

We had a German exchange student that introduced us to Nutella and we loved it! I think it would make a great buttercream!

Hi, yes, i have used it in swiss meringue buttercream . I maybe added 5-6 lg. TBS. to a recipe of the b/c. Then i iced it in chocolate smbc. I actually crushed up toasted hazelnuts in the b/c that i put the Nutella. It was really good. The cake itself was a hazelnut cake. yummy

I haven't actually used Nutella, but Hazelnut Cake with Chocolate Ganache is a popular flavor combination for me- which essentially IS Nutella

I also use Nutella as a filling and eat it right out of the jar on a spoon! I love the stuff. Hazelnut cake sounds delicious. Does anyone have a tried and true recipe?

I just made nutella cookies last night too! My husband says they were the best cookies he's ever tasted (never mind that he says that pretty much every time I try a new recipe icon_rolleyes.gif ).

I have beaten it into buttercream, for use as filling, topping the filling with crushed hazelnuts (I like crunchies in between my layers). I have never done a full frosting with it.

Sure, this is the one I used:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups Nutella
1 1/3 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 Tbsp milk or half-and-half
1 cup milk chocolate chips (optional)

Cream together butter, Nutella and sugars, beat in eggs, vanilla, and milk. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix into creamed mixture, add the chocolate chips. Chill dough for about an hour (I didn't).

Bake at 375 for about 10 minutes.

Gomo: He definitely is! thumbs_up.gif

I've also seen other recipes that are more of a thumbprint-type cookie, with the dough balls rolled in chopped hazelnuts and the Nutella used as the thumbprint filling.

I have used Nutella as a filling for my yellow cake and then iced with chocolate BC. I usually brush the layers with hazelnut-flavored liquor or hazelnut syrup. It is delicious!

I generally soften the Nutella slightly in the microwave to make it more spreadable, and then put the filled cake in the fridge briefly to allow it to firm back up. It keeps the layers from slipping around while I am crumb coating.
