I purchased a can of silver cake graffiti spray and it was awful. It quit spraying within 20 or 30 seconds or so. I shook, rinsed the spray cap, wiped the opening, had my hubby try to help, etc. We were able to get it going a couple times for a few seconds each. Then no more. And when it did spray sometimes color came out, sometimes air and sometimes a wet something that ran. So I had an awful blotchy mess. I loaded up the cake and went to Michaels were I bought the graffiti. Same problem with EIGHT more cans. Fay from Michaels was a dear to try and help me in their class room and she said it was the worst product she had ever worked with and would be damaging out all the cans. And we did try gently putting a pin in the orifice as well. All of the cans had product in them, it seems to be plugging up, but as with the first can, even when they did spray, it wasn't consistent and would be color or air switching back and forth and sometimes the wet liquid. With the use of 9 cans we were able to get a somewhat even coverage. The cake was 9 inch diameter by 6 inch high and should have easily been coverable based on what the cans says it will cover. It was a horrible product. I have informed Duff and Michaels to let them know. Just wanted to pass my experience on.

I agree, I've used the other colors and they were fine. The silver was terrible..I returned it.

I did get a reply from Duff's company and I do appreciate the quick response. They were very nice and appreciative of my contacting them, want to make it right by me, etc. Here is part of what they said....."We are currently aware of an issue with this product, and correction is in progress.

Complete correction of this item may not take affect until future factory production runs."

Huh? You know you have a problem but don't have it pulled off the shelves?

I just checked and it is still available on Duff.com website so they haven't even stopped selling it themselves.

Guess they don't care THAT much. Hopefully cakes don't get ruined.

I ALSO purchased the Duff Silver Spray and was SO disappointed in the performance of the product. First and foremost - the spray did not come out as "SILVER" - more of a blueish/gray color that had very little silver metallic hue to it at all. I should have returned it, but didn't. I ended up going to a cake supply store and purchasing a powdered silver dust that I added pure lemon extract to - to get the real silver look I was going for.
I was very, very disappointed!

I've only used it sparsely to give some "sheen" to the cake. It works fine if you spray in short bursts. I've never actually used it to give a silver color to anything.

I used Duff's silver spray, also, and was very disappointed in the spray and the color. I, now, use Chefmaster silver spray and it works beautifully and is a fabulous color silver.

I haven't tried it, but glad to know what to avoid.

On a similar note, I bought their white buttercream/fondant (not sure what 'buttercream' fondant is, but I digress), for a cake that I knew I might be short of white Satinice on. So of course I'm working on it late at night, and when I opened the Duff fondant to make up the last tier when I ran out of Satinice, it was practically YELLOW, it was so ivory. Not even remotely close to white! argh! #@%^&&*!

So I had to roll up my sleeves and MAKE fondant at like 11 p.m. for a cake the next day. I was pretty pi$$ed and I won't buy his white stuff ever again. I have used the black and brown and had good luck though.

I really want to love their products, because I'm a huge fan, but it's hard when stuff like this happens.

I don't like his "buttercream" fondant either. It's just another name for Choco-Pan. And I hate Choco-Pan...well, I mean I LOVE the taste, but it is a nightmare for me to work with (too soft)!

thanks for the info on his sprays.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that can't work with Choco-Pan. I bought a big tub because I was finally moving on to the good stuff (or at least that was the idea). Most of it is still sitting in my pantry waiting for me to use it for little colored decorations. I cannot cover a cake with it to save my life (tried for 4 hours one day before I got something resembling ok ready to go out the door, and swore never to repeat).

Good to know on the Duff silver -- I was actually thinking of trying these sprays recently. I long for an airbrush of my very own...

I know those is a little off topic. I found choco-pan was a ton easier if I mix in a little of the regular fondant like Satin Ice or even wilton. Maybe a 70 chocopan/30 regular split. You get better workability and still maintian the chocopan taste. Also you always roll chocopan on PS never cornstarch.

I just ordered The Mat from Sweetwise and I'm curious to see how that works with Chocopanicon_smile.gif Hoping to try it this week.

yea, the silver doesnt work, i dont understand why they wont pull it off the shelf. And i tried Choco-pan and i tried it FOUR times and it didnt come out right. I even had this lady who did cakes for YEARS and she couldnt do it either. My customer came over for a "surprise" inspection and completly hated it, yelled at me, canceled the order, and demanded a refund. (who does a surprise inspection any way?!!!) Well we cant beat em all can we?

Not sure how else to describe it except.... Product failure! I returned two cans to Michael's and they looked at me like I was nuts! I told them I can sorry for a min of 15 seconds and they clogged. I took tops odd and boiled them... And then tried again... No luck! There is no way this product was tested for effectiveness prior to putting on store shelves.

I did get replacement cans, lost my receipt and am now stuck with cans that intermittently work. I think Michael's should issue refunds on any unused cans...regardless of receipt or not, since they are the only carriers of this product line.

I recently just purchased the cake graffiti gold and silver spray. I texted it on one of my cupcakes and for some reason it has a horrible taste to it. A big chemical taste to it.. I will never buy it again!!!!

I'm confused. You "texted" it on a cupcake? What does that mean?

I'm guessing "tested". "x" isn't far from "s" on the keyboard.

I am so glad you said this! I have some Dallas Cowboy cupcakes to make next month and I was gonna use grey frosting and spray his silver over it for sheen. Now I guess I'll take the drive to the good cake store and get a can of PME silver. I have a can of their gold and it works well.

I gave a friend of mine a bottle of Duff's silver spray and she also ran into the same problem. She'll be glad to see that it wasn't her. Hope they change their minds and pull it rather than have defective products ruin their reputation... but maybe it is already too late for that?

I just used some on gumpaste/fondant tools I made for a cake and the spray worked fine. Can't say about the taste because the tools were just for decoration. Maybe my store has the fixed batch?

i have purchased several cans of the silver spray and I love it! I used it for two tiaras for my nieces birthday and they looked great. If you want a deep silver, you have to use a lot. On my other cakes I just sprayed for a shimmer. I am going to purchased lots of cans before and if they get pulled from the shelf.

I love Duff and also buy many of his products but haven't tried the Grafitti Silver. I have tried using silver in my airbrush and had the same problems - not so much the clogging but spitting - causing spots on my football helmet. Seems that with silver you need to keep agitating the mixture during spraying - so the next time I'm going to try and mix alcohol with silver liquid half and half and will keep my finger or saran wrap over the opening while shaking the airbrush to keep it mixed.

I've used the silver spray twice. Both on my beer bucket cakes. The first time it covered nicely on my ganache, but I didn't have the borders on so I had to buy another can. It didn't look as good, but i thought it was just me. I bought one can for the 2nd cake thinking it would easily be enough for a 8in round 4-5 inches high. I ran out so the bottom barely has very little color.
Glad to see it is not something I'm doing wrong on my part.
