Things I've learned about my umpteen years on the internet:

1. There are people that join message boards to argue or at the very least cause drama. Sad fact, but they do.

2. Venting is best left with people you know or are at least aquainted with. Even when they don't really understand what you're venting about, it's still the better option.

3. Try not to take yourself, or anyone else, too seriously.

And now, back to happy caking world!

can we see a picture of the cake and cupcakes?

I took a quick pic and it is under my photos/profile. My main dissatisfaction with the cupcakes are with the more human characters. If the client had said she wanted to pick up in the afternoon I would have had time to do them right from the start. In the end, i didn;t have much time to redo them.

Kooky -- your characters are SO good that I'm thinkin' the warning about the Disney copyright was right on target. Your almost "client" was an idiot.

ok. The next time this happens, repeat after me "I am too good for this. I am worth more than this. I should NOT have to grovel for customers."

This woman has emotional issues. And obviously, you may have some too if you RE-did this cake for her, and were even a little embarrassed by this work and agreed with the customer. Do NOT do this to yourself again. You tell others how they should treat you, as Dr. Phil wisely says.

How much did you charge this loony toon initially? (before she skunked you out of your hard earned payment?)
Did she pay you in check? If so, here is the scenario:
"I know this check will bounce, so if I throw a fit, maybe she'll knock the price down. If I cry, I'm sure she will. Oh, crap, she wants the cake back to redo it, she's not offering a discount. I guess its off to Publix for me then..."
You deserve more than that. Good Grief.

Thanks for all the amazing encouragement. I had to redo the cake, she smashed the top. I do have guilt/esteem issues from my stupid upbringing. I do realize that the cake/cupcakes look fairly good and that her son is the one that missed out. To be fair, it didn't look quite as good when she came to pick them up, because some of the wrappers were peeling away, but the characters and frosting looked the same. Had she come back to pick them up, I think she would have felt stupid or maybe not bc she seemed like a psycho. Who cries over a birthday cake and cupcakes? I know never to deal with these types again. I admit the mysterious voice in the background making derogatory comments really ate away at my confidence.

Hi kookycutter ~ Oh I just love the cake you did, and your web site! You do beautiful work! thumbs_up.gif

I just wanted to jump in and say I'm sorry this happened to you. It's challenging to deal with a dissatisfied client, but I think you went above and beyond for this one. I see you've had lots of good advice from Indydeb and others, so I can't really think of anything right now to add. Except to say that you shouldn't feel too bad about it. You did everything you could to accommodate her, and in the end it was she who left you hanging since you did all the extra work and she pulled a no-show. icon_surprised.gif

Anyway, welcome to CC, and I wish you much happiness and success as we move into the busy holiday season! icon_smile.gif

Kookycutter, when stuck with a cake for whatever reason, why chuck it? Look in the phone book for a battered women's shelter, there are many children there that would have appreciated it and maybe you could have even used it as a tax write off as a donation. Just a suggestion. I was stuck with a wedding cake and took it to a retirement home. The elderly love their sweets as well.

Best of luck in your future endeavors. icon_smile.gif And your Toy Story cake was lovely, clean and well done.

If you read the entire thread, you would have known the reason was because it was returned... it could have been compromised during the customer's possession. A great reason to chuck it.

Wow, what a way to make a person feel welcome and like they can vent. I know I would NEVER post my business site on here or anything else that can identify me, cause I may want to come here to vent about a customer, but would not want that to some how come back and haunt me. I thought this was a palce of support, but I guess you have to prove yourself to others first. How nice of you all. thumbsdown.gif

Fasten your seatbelts--Kooky is buoyed by another anchorless poster.

Which I'm not saying y'all aren't real. I'm saying this happens a lot and it's frustrating to be played. If you're not playing us--GOOD--come on out then.

And for what it's worth--please read the very well intentioned and good advice I gave to op. Nothing wrong with me making a request for some id. It's like no contract, no deposit, don't turn on your oven. In this case--you've got good advice now sign the contract and show us your website 'cause we already go the oven heating--gave good advice.

Besides, we should all be careful about what we say online. Revealing ourselves for who we are keeps us each in check as it should be.

There's no harm no foul no shame in revealing in this case.

My apologies. My eyes are not as good as they used to be and I must have missed that part. Yes indeed, if the quality was compromised, then no, it shouldn't be consumed. I was under the impression that she baked a second cake that was not picked up.

I am confused here. I've posted replies about four times; I guess I wasn't supposed to since I have no photos submitted. I learned about this site a year or more ago from a grocery store clerk when she saw the quantities of cake mixes I was buying (largest cake I've made was for 225 people; I am just a hobbiest although I do charge...they are for friends and relatives and hardly ever covers material cost and definitely not my time). First I didn't post pics because my cakes look nice, but nowhere near the quality of what I see on CC. Now I realize, it doesn't matter because I don't have the slightest idea how to post personal cake pics. I love this site; have obtained many fav pics here and fav recipes. Guess this is my last post though.

Don't be silly and don't stop posting. If you do want to post pictures, go to "my photos", directly above "favorite photos". Once there, at the top of the page it was have a place to download photos. Once you get in there, I think you'll be able to follow the steps, but if not, give a holler and someone will help you through it. If you don't want to post your cakes, that's fine, but don't stop posting. Something I've gained by all the cakes here, is good or bad, they are all wonderful and can inspire an idea for you for a cake you want to make.

Whoa, this thread is like a car wreck, but I just couldn't look away.

#1 Kookycutter sorry this happened, but lesson learned.

#2 It took a while for me to get the nerve to post pictures, I thought my cakes would look like crap upside everybody else.

#3 We all have something to contribute, be it advise on customers, a recipe, a new technique or opinions on equipment etc.

#4 I have come to think of this website as a sisterhood not a competition. Folks who have had similar experience and great war stories.

#5 It's one thing to hear a customer tell you a cake looks awesome but it is something else all together to hear a fellow decorator tell you your cake looks awesome.

So there it is ladies and gentlemen...now lets play nice and welcome the new kids to the sandbox.

I NEVER THOUGHT YOU'RE POST WAS FAKE... AS I WAS READING IT I REALLY THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO SAY THAT THE ORDER TURNED OUT TO BE ANOTHER CAKE DECORATOR TRYING TO GET YOU TO DESIGN HER CAKE... THAT HAPPENED TO ME ONCE, I EVEN WENT AS FAR AS SENDING A SKECTH THEN I RECEIVED AN EMAIL SAYING THANKS BUT NO THANKS... BUT WOW THAT "ALMOST" CUSTOMER WAS REALLY RUDE BY NOT PICKING UP HER CAKE AFTER YOU TOOK EXTRA TIME (AFTER TELLING HER YOU HAD TO BE SOMEWHERE IN 30 MINUTES) TO REBAKE THE CUPCAKES AND REDECORATE THE CAKE... Yeah, I think one of the reasons no one jumped all over it is because it's all been talked to death and #2, they moved the thread.

I for one agree with your comments. They could have simply asked me for some samples. I reread some of the comments, and they are rather scathing and accusatory.

If I had the time to fake that whole story, then I am a very sad person with WAY too much time on my hands.
