I actually had a customer call to ask me that today. She wanted to know if she could pick up her items today, but could we hold the check until Wednesday.....who asks a business to do that?

Haha! that reminds me of a customer who asked if I could print her up an invoice and bill her later in the month...mind you, I'm just a two-three order per week, home baker. I was like , and said, while clinging on to her box of cookies, "Actually I need you to give me money now and then I'll give you the cookies, that's how I operate" She laughed it off and pulled a checkbook out of her purse and says, "Well, I might as well pay you now then, things get crazy at the end of the month when I pay my bills and I don't want to forget to pay you." And she's like the wealthiest lady in town...I swear I have more issues getting the rich people to pay than anyone else!

madamraz, I totally agree. The people WITH the money tend to have the tightest grip on it!

Jill, that's amazing, especially today, that people ask that. I remember as a kid, it was SUPER common to ask the local gas station or grocery store to hold a check until payday. Our family and a lot of people we knew did it all the time (small town, ya know!). but today? Nuh-uh.

I "held a check" for one of my brides, but totally different circumstances. She wanted to pay me in installments and have it all paid up before the wedding. She went ahead and wrote me four checks that totalled the entire invoice and dated them one per month. She wrote them in her calendar and I put them in her file, depositing one on each of the written date. good for her .... good for me.

But that's the ONLY way I'd take a post-dated check or hold one.

Yeah, I MIGHT (big might) do that for a wedding, making sure that the cake is paid in full on the due date, but this was for an order that she was supposed to pick up today!!

Luckily, since they are Cake Bites, they'll last until Wednesday when she has the $$.

In Texas they DA PROSECUTES hot checks (good for us!), but NOT if you "hold it" because then you are actually not accepting payment, but rather writing them a loan.

Loans come with interest around here...
