" Blah Blah Cakes, May I help you?"
"Do you do cupcakes?"
"Sure do!"
"I need some delivered to Lima, Ohio today" (Lima is 2 hours away from me)
"I'm sorry, ma'am....there's just no way at this point....This is a 100% customer order cake decorating shop. I have nothing baked and awaiting an order."
"FINE." click. buzzzzz......................
Sigh....
aren't those customers fun? The "If you don't do exactly as I demand you get treated like shit" customers. Why is it people think they can treat people bad on the phone when they wouldn't dare do it in person?
Yesterday my brother called 2 hours before we close to order a birthday cake for his son...for that afternoon. Of course I am like, "are you kidding?"
That happens to me at least once a week...phone rings at 8am - "can I order a cake and have it delivered for 12pm today?" ummm, no.
Oh goodness, if only we had keebler elf magic?
keebler elf magic It seems like most of the orders I take on are what we would consider 'rush' orders. Even though I state on my website that I need atleast two weeks notice they still call with orders for THAT WEEK. I got an order on Monday for Thursday and said yes-mostly because I need the money around this time of year, but I can't wait until I'm established enough to say...hell to the NO!
If it's someone I really like (or someone who genuinely seems super nice) I'll generally do it last minute if I have time.
What is wrong with these kind of people, they only seem polite when they're getting something out of you.
Oh! New one this morning! Here it is Thursday am, and I awake to this email:
I know this is extremely late notice but I was hoping to get a birthday cake that would feed at least 15 people by this Friday, the 19th, no later than 5pm. I have a few ideas of what I would like, and I have attached photos to better explain, but I would like a round cake (tiered if practical with only 15-20 ppl and w/in price range) with fondant that is pink and black and has rhinestones, roses, swirls, etc., or something of that nature. If you could please let me know if this is something that's even possible with such late notice and a price quote I would really appreciate it. In addition, if it is over $100 could you please let me know how much more and also what I could get for something more in that price range of $100 or less. Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you
I know she's being polite, but seriously???? You should see the pictures attatched: Several large gumpaste roses, LOTS of piping and embossed fondant .... I want the money, but seriously. There is only so much I can handle with that kind of notice! I guess I missed out when they were handing out magic wands!

Well, that's it, isn't it? It's getting so that they WOULD do it in person. No manners and no shame anymore.
I am shocked and amazed how many people have called me asking if I will deliver a cake to them on Thanksgiving. can't pick it up the day before, they are too busy! How DARE I be closed for thanksgiving!!!
the best part of all of this is that they want a cake RIGHT NOW, but if they knew it was baked ahead, they would throw a fit. In fact I've had a customer hint that she ordered so late to guarantee freshness.
I bet if you responded to a last minute order, "well, I have some amaretto chocolate in the freezer, we could do that..." They would say, "its not FRESH?!"
Good Grief.
I've run into the same thing loriesmom!! I've told people they can pick it up on Wednesday, but I am closed for the holiday weekend. They are shocked and appalled, but I need to allow my employees time during the holidays with their families.
Oh may...Since we are on the subject, I just have to share this one...I'm still laughing!
I copied this from my Facebook message:
"Hi Brittany
I know that this is October 29th and you are doing a wedding, but I was wondering do you have time to whip up another skull cake.
I have met you several times at Caroline's .
We are going to a neighborhood Halloween party Sunday night and I am baking some candy bar brownies, but your cake looks great. Let me know, via FB
or call me Saturday after 9:00am"
BTW, she sent me this at 10:00 PM! So really? Let me just drop everything ( as my wedding cake that was booked several months ago) plus the OTHER cakes I had and whip a 3D Skull cake for your block party tomorrow!

I think you have a lot of nerve to be closed on Thanksgiving! I expect you to be open for Christmas AND NEw YEars! Just kidding !!!!
What unnerves me is this: being only a hobby baker (and YES! I get those requests too!), I personally know most of my 'clients' (some more than others, of course); when I have to refuse an order for late notice...they never call back with an order that is planned ahead...that's just rude IMHO!!
got to love it! I turned down 3 cakes for the day after thanksgiving to be used for Saturday morning and ppl couldn't believe that I could possibly say NO! I decided to actually spend one holiday with my family without being up to my eyes i cake!! I tried to explain that i bake fresh and that with me not being available Thursday or Friday that I would have to have a cake decorated by wednesday for saturday and I was not willing to serve old cake. I'm a mom not a machine.lol!!
I've said this before....try working in a CPA's office during tax season. Some people will call on April 15th (and the weeks preceeding it), thinking we're sitting there with our feet on our desks, just waiting for THEM to call. And, NO, we don't even have time to do your extensions (which involve calculations and maybe even payments)! Wake up!

the same here...my employees are all from out of town and need to travel on Wednesday, so I am just here for even a few hours on Wednesday.
A little off subject but I got a call today from a corporation that is having a huge Christmas party for 1000 people. They want sheet cakes with chocolate ganache on them. Budget? 400.00 Yeah Right!! I am not even sure they can do that at Costco.... I wished them luck.
Hi karateka
Heck I only live about 30 minutes from Lima, OH but don't know if I could even do that.

You think there are bakeries or at least a grocery store that makes cupcakes in Lima (?)

So this is when they round up volunteer bakers in the company and make their own cakes (or cupcakes) - BC mixes were 49 cents this week at Albertsons so they might be able to pull it off it they shop smartly
linstead
OH yes, Walmart, Sam Club, Rays, Kroger and more all in Lima

I guess they don't deliver!

I had a girl call LAST WEEK to see if I would do a wedding cake on Thanksgiving. I said no, and she proceeded to whine, beg and try to get me to let her pick it up beforehand and freeze it. I kept saying no no no, and it got to the point that my son, who was working on the computer in the room, turned around to watch me while I kept telling her no. When I finally hung up on her he said "How many times do you have to tell people no?" People are crazy.
