Because it was too big? My bakery accepted an order that I think is too big for us to be able to fill, not without slacking on the other stuff we need to get done.
Just made me wonder if any of you guys encountered something like this. Maybe I'm just thinking this because it's the biggest order I've encountered.
Absolutely! I have to turn down oversized cake orders, because I work out of home, and I am one person baking business. I beleive customer should get fresh cake, so if it is too big to be done in two days, I have to say no. And I exsplain my reason to customer. I think quality is more important.
I don't think I have. However, I have turned down some piddly orders because a very large order blocked up most of my weekend.
After all, I can be bought.
Yes I agree! I was asked to make 200 mini cakes for a wedding and i had to say no. I am a one woman show. I think I would be in the nut house after I did those! lol
We probably turn down an average of 4-5 orders per week, these days we have been booked at least 2-3 weeks in advance (at a rough max capacity of 6 orders per weekend).
Our business is different from most: we primarily do party cakes, and the vast majority of our customers have food allergies so we have to plan production carefully to avoid cross-contamination issues.
I turn down at least two orders a week for the same reason. I am 1 person (plus a part time intern) show and I can only handle so much!
I turn cakes down every day because I'm booked up already, but I don't know if that counts as being too big. I guess it would if you added everything together. Like Jennzoe said, there's only so much that one person can do.

I'm an one-woman-show too and I turn down at least one order a week, it's usually the clueless customer who wants something super special (because she feels she IS special) for right now.
I had this lady last Saturday coming into my shop to see if I had a three-tier cake IN STOCK! for her dd's birthday that same day, I breathed deeply and very nicely explained to her that I was a very small business and I didn't have that type of cakes in my case, I explained that type of orders normally takes DAYS to make and I offered some of my cupcakes and/ or small cakes I keep at the shop.
Then she looks throught my books and points at a VERY elaborate cake with bows and ribbons and sugar flowers...the works and says: "so this is not something you can whip up while I wait" I smiled and said: "Sure but you'll be waiting for at least 14 hours!"
I don't mind turning these type of orders away because they're pointless; if my guts tell me I can't make it because of either capacity or whatever reason I'm usually making the right decision.
I do if I'm booked. I also recently got a request for Justin Beiber cake. The second call I've gotten about this and I really have no desire to do this. Fortunately, they called late wednesday afternoon and wanted it for Friday so we were booked.
