What Do You Charge For Delivery?

Wondering what the basic going rate is for delivery.
I charge ONE WAY only... $35 within 10 miles. Then $2.50 for each additional mile.
I build the delivery fee into the cost of the cake. Amount depends on distance. I think telling people "free delivery", even if the cost of the cake is higher makes them think they're getting a deal.
Why would you only charge one way? Don't you have to get back home? Have you found a way to make your car run with no gas? Tell me how!
What do you charge? I charge round trip as well.
Do some of you charge a flat rate or rate per mile? I don't see it being worth it for someone to be charged $40 delivery to go 5 miles the same as someone who's 25 miles away.
0-10 miles $25
11-20 miles $50
21-30 miles $75
31-40 miles $100
$2.00 a mile additional 41+ miles
We live in a tourist town Myrtle beach, SC so nearly all deliveries are within 10 miles.
Never had a bride say, Nah, i will pick it up!!
And I would DEF charge BOTH WAYS!!!! If i am driving 2 hours away, I am not sucking up 30$ in gas on the return!
ANd i cant say "free delivery" as i post my per slice fee on my website!
I live in Atlanta metro area, so I have deliveries all over. I find $50 delivery to be excessive IMO. I don't do weddings. All my cake orders have been birthday related for the most part. Only 2 of my orders were over $100. Taking on a $50 delivery fee to drop a $100 cake off, 4 miles away seems ridiculous. I charge .40/mile.
I charge one way becuase I'm nuts. lol No.... it's actually because I'm trying to stay competitive and I am able to say "I only charge you one way." It's just a little something extra. Sometimes... I regret it. Other times... I'm glad to make some money for the delivery as opposed to them telling me they'd rather pick up and then not making any money on the delivery.....

The standard IRS rate for 2010 is $.50/mile. I use that when I travel for my "real" job to get my mileage money back. I would think if you are going to charge, you can at least use the going rate. With that said, the IRS rate changes every year based on expenses so check it on the IRS website often
I only do small time birthday cakes...but with that said I charge $25. Most of the time its within 20 miles.
But most of the time people want to pick the cake up.

I like to say that I charge less. I'm not looking into making a huge profit on the delivery. It's the cake I want to make a big profit on.
