I hate my new oven!! It's one with the hidden elements and I really don't like it!!! My cake spilled over in it this evening and it really smoked up the house. So much so that the fire alarm went off. It's connected to the security system. To make a long story short, I was very embarrassed when the fire dept. showed up!!! OMG!! Can you picture it.....neighbors running into the yard, fire trucks coming screaming up, all because of a spilt cake in the oven! I may never bake again icon_cry.gif

Hopefully this will be an incident you can look back on and laugh! I can definitely see where you'd be embarrassed though...

If it makes you feel any better, my sister-in-law lives in a graduate student housing complex with a similarly designed security system and she says at least once a month (sometimes more) the entire building is evacuated due to cooking issues.

Make some cupcakes for the station that responded.

I did this when our basement had smoke in it, and we couldn't figure out where it was coming from. So we called 911 to see if they had any ideas about to locate the source of the smoke. Next thing I know, 6 fire trucks and 15 fire fighters are at our house looking for the source of the smoke. It was a blown sump pump motor! I was so embarrassed! icon_redface.gif

I dropped off 3 dozen cupcakes the next day, and they were soooooo appreciative.

Great idea about the cupcakes, I'll have my husband deliver them icon_smile.gif I forgot to tell you the other part of the story, I dialed 911 last week because of sparks flying from the powerlines, made for beautiful fireworks! The neighbors told me last night that I've been the best source of entertainment they've had in a long time icon_redface.gif Thanks for making me feel alittle less stupid! On the plus side, at least the cake doesn't taste bad, don't know why it doesn't but I'll take it!!!

My husband is a fireman and I was going to suggest that you send them some cupcakes (not that they "need" it), but they will love it....but someone beat me to it!

That's a great idea! How do I find out where they are located without calling 911?

Check the phone book for the local non-emergency number and give them a call! Around here the PD dispatchers also dispatch for Fire and EMS, so we're a one-stop-shop, lol. Some places have gone to "regional" dispatch centers, so the person who answers your call could be a city (or county!) or two away! I would definitely let them know you will be bringing them in as a "thank you" for all their hard work. Let me know how it turns out! thumbs_up.gif

I was also going to say bring them cake, they'll be happy. re: firefighters.

As for finding the 911 dispatcher, you can ask the firefighters where they are, or ask for the non-emergency number to reach them.

My fiance and I both ended up in the hospital at the end of last year (a month or so appart) but we both ended up with the same nurses. Now that the holiday season is over, I'm going to bake them a cake and take it up to the hospital as a thank you. I already send cookies to the EMS team that came to the house to pick him up (lucky for me one of them was the son of a friend so I knew where to send them).

Everyone likes to be thanked, and it's even better in cake! icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, and last year I got a new oven and the first two times I baked in it I set the darn thing on fire... not just smoke but FLAMES shooting out, so don't feel too bad!

I had a similar thing happen to me just before Thanksgiving. I was frying chicken and some condensation made its way down behind the knobs and next thing I know blue sparks and flames are shooting out of the front and the whole kitchen smelled like burnt electricity. I called the non-emergency line to ask if I could just turn off the breaker, clean everything up, and then use it again.....They sent a fire truck, sirens blaring! I was really embarrassed to begin with, but then the fireman suggested I clean my oven!
