Hi, I was just wondering if you can use store bought icing to make the character pan cakes? If someone could help me out with this I would greatly appreciate the info.
Thanks,
Sarah

Do you mean like pillsbury or betty crocker? These are too soft to do good star piping, which it what character pans usually call for. You can add confectioner's sugar to thicken them up a bit. Beat it in REALLY well, or you'll have chunks of sugar trying to get out of your star tip! Not fun! Sift the sugar before you beat it in. If you can find it, usually Wal-Mart has it, try the Wilton icing in the tubs, there are directions to thin this kind a little, because it comes sort of hard. and I think there are directions on the can to microwave it to become soft. You'll probably need 2-3 tubs for 1 character pan. If you really get into decorating, it is more economical to make your own....and everyone on here has a different opinion as to what's 'best'! You have to try it for yourself.
