One of my tiers for an upcoming cake is a double layer 12" round. It'll be my first time making the WASC cake and I was wondering if 3 box mixes will be enough to do both layers or if you think I'll need more? Thank you for your help!

Well the 12 inch will take 7 1/2 cups and when I make the WASC I usually have about 7 C of batter. HTH

as mentioned above you'll need 7-1/2 cups per 2" tall layer. So if you're making a 4" tall tier you're going to need at least 15 cups of batter.

Depending on the brand of cake mix you use will depend on whether or not you have enough batter. I use DH with one egg and a box of pudding added and consistently get 5-1/2 cups per box. If you use PB or BC then it seems that you'll get less than that. Box mixes are not consistent between brands on how much they actually produce.
If you only have 3 boxes and don't want to go purchase more I suggest taking a look at some of the extender recipes on the site so you can just add some more ingredients to get enough batter for both layers.

Just did a 12" round double layer cake this weekened. I used 3(DH) box mixes, no extender worked out fine. HTH.

Thanks for the replies...I think it'll be smart to just do 4 then and if I don't need the extra I'll just make matching cake pops!

I have a question. I am doing a 12" this weekend as well. I am using the Durable recipe that Sharon Z. uses. It is 1 box mix, box of pudding and flavorings. I plan to double the recipe. I plan on doing this two different times. One time for 1 12" round cake pan and the second time for the 2nd 12" round cake pan. Stack together to make a total of 4"

Is my thinking correct on this?

I wanted to let folks know that I made the 12" cake this weekend that I talked about above. I used 2 boxes of DH mix with additives and it was plenty enough for one 2" cake layer that was 12" round.
