Hello. I am making Crying Baby Fondant Cupcake Toppers for a Baby Shower next Saturday. I am starting them tonight. What is the best way to store them for the next week? I will slowly be working on them. I made a test topper last night and woke up this morning and it was extremely softened, and melted a bit...impossible to pick up. I have heard refrigerating them is not a good idea...I just dont want them to be too soft to pick up and work with through out the next week. They will have alot of different colored fondant on them and I am worried they will bleed together. I wont be making the cupcakes until Wed or Thurs. Can someone give me some ideas? Thanks for all your help!!

It all depends on the climate you live in - high humidity and fondant are not friends. You shouldn't put them in the fridge though - try a cardboard box. I always mix the fondant with some gumpaste or tylose to help them along.

I live in Floridaicon_smile.gif Not a great place for this I know. Plus these cupcakes will be outside most of the day as it is a garden type party. What will the cardboard box do?

The cardboard box is supposed to help with the humidity, but honestly, now hearing you are in Florida and it's going to be an outside party, I'd have to defer to others with more experience....I think you may need to use gumpaste mixed in the fondant.

I just made 48 cupcakes with little fondant hearts on top.  I'd read many places on the internet that you can refrigerate fondant…so I refrigerated the decorated cupcakes.  When I took them out the next morning, the little hearts were all drooped down onto the cupcake.  Fortunately, I'd made extras so I gingerly pulled each off the cupcake and added new ones.    I still am not sure if you can EVER refrigerate fondant, but I think one of my problems was that the little hearts were very thin.  Perhaps a thicker decoration would have held up?  I don't know.

AI agree with adding gum paste , that is what I would do if it where me, I'm in Texas so the weather here is very humid

AYup, mix tylose or gum tex to your fondant or use 50/50 fondant and gumpaste. Humidity and heat will make your toppers droop right away if you use straight fondant! Give them a few days to dry and store inside a cardboard box and never in an airtight container like tupperware as it can also make your fondant toppers melt, droop or become sticky and shiny :( good luck!!
