I posted a picture I took of my daughter's post reception cake with the Fondant Cala Lilies, but I didn't say HOW that cake arrived to the post reception...lol

I made the cake, decorated it and packed it up and trusted my exhubby to deliver it for me as I HAD a breakfast date that I couldn't break. (meeting with a potential client)

I'm sitting at the restaurant in the middle of the meeting and I get a call on my celly that "SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THE CAKE AND YOU NEED TO COME HOME".

I excused myself and told him that he just HAD to take care of whatever it was, while I had my business I taught him and my 2 kids basic cake decorating, for...just in case..lol

Well, since it was just for my daughter I wasn't too concerned about getting the cake there before the party, so...I continued with my meeting even though I made sure that it was a short one. Smiled pretty, talked a good game but inside I was dying...wondering WHAT could've happened to this cake that I didn't even want to make..lol

I get home and my ex ( he was visiting for the wedding ) tells me how sorry he was about the cake...??? huh??

He had placed the cake on the sofa while he went out to start the car so that he could turn on the ac, since I use swiss meringue buttercream and it doesn't do too well in the heat...

When he got back into the house, he found the cat STANDING on TOP of the cake box!!!

I was like WAAAAA?!?!? I flip back the cover of the box .....find that the top of the cake was stuck to the bottom of the lid!!

OMG, what was I going to do...I had a few extra Cala Lilies but...NO MORE ICING and didn't have anymore ingredients to make anymore!! SOOOO...I thought, well...if I scrape the icing off the inside of the lid and throw it back on the cake, I can salvage whatever flowers can be salvaged and it will be good to go.

!!!!!

The icing was full of crumbs from the top of the cake, the writing on the cake was a coral color, when I finished trying to repair the cake, it looked like the top was competing for a TIE DYE T-SHIRT contest!!

It looked BAD. I tried to hide it with the flowers, but believe me, NOTHING could hide the orange mess full of crumbs that was on top of the cake.

What do I do now??

Well, trying hard to control the Heart attack that was about to make me collapse, I took a magic marker and wrote on the box:

"Please do not display cake. Take into kitchen and cut and serve from there" and I added a short note about the cat taking a nap on the cake box!..lol

Since I didn't hear from anyone at the party, I thought that my daughter was Po'ed with me about the cake..lol

It wasn't untill my granddaughter was born did I hear from the Hostess, she said she put the cake out, no one cared..and it was GREAT...

whewwwwwwwww!

Now I know why state lic. boards insist that you have NO pets in your commercial kitchens..lol

Heehee, sorry, but, you know, it was a box and a cat has to be a cat! And now you know why, I put several sheets of tin foil on top of my boxed cakes, haha! The cats just hate the sound of tinfoil. so it kind of deters them, haha! And yes, I also found out the hard way that cake boxes are great places for napping if you happen to be a pussycat, haha!

The poor man got an earful, as he KNOW better than to take my cake out of the kitchen and place them on soft surfaces like the sofa!! Grrrrrrrr!!!

If the cake would've dropped on the floor, he would've for sure gotten me to explode like a cartoon character. As I would've lost my head for sure!!

I am just curious about your fondant calla lilies. Are they as thin as gumpaste? Do they handle as well? I didn't get to see the photo of your daughter's cake but would like to. Did you color them with luster color? Thanks

I lock my cats up in another room when I do my cakes. I can't take ANY risk.

I am so glad you made it through that!!!

the fondant callas are not as thin as gumpaste, the flower is a bit thick anyway so I got away with it. Yes, I did color them with luster colors and once they are dry to the touch, they can be handled.

You know that is interesting, perhaps it is just me but I personally find it easier to roll fondant thinner than gumpaste which is why I tend to prefer it for some flowers. And so far, anytime I see folks' gumpaste flowers, I find the petals extremely thick and wonder why they don't roll them thinner.
I think your callas are wonderful though and that is one flower that I think you have to roll thicker regardless of what you use.
