Hi all

I know this has probably been discussed loads of times, but I would just like some help with my business name - I AM GOING MAD!!!!

My business was called the "Butterfly Cakery", but then 2 other cake businesses with very similar names opened up within 30 miles of me, so I thought I better change my name before my business really got off the ground. Anyway, I have been going nuts trying to think of a new name, so far I have come up with :

Cakeology (with me being the chief cakeologist!)
Orange Blossom Cake Company
HotchPotch Cakes (my surname is Hotchkiss)
Funky Monkey Cake Company
All About Cake
Happy Little Cake Company
Dragonfly Cakes
Crazy Daisy Cake Company
Kake
Forget Me Not Cakes (but there are 2 other FMN Cake Cos within 50 miles)
Cake Whisperer

Does anyone have an opinion on these names.... or any others!?

Thanks
ST

I like the Cakeology. But it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. "See you later honey, I'm going to go down to Cakeology to pick up the cake for the party tonight. What about something like "The Cakery" (combo cake and bakery). Or how about "cakescents", makes me wanna walk right in and smell the yummy baking cake. "Everything Cake" is pretty broad spectrum but categorically specific. Is there a law in your state that prohibits using a like name? I would imagine there is. You should check with your state's name registry to see if any of your names are already used. You may have already done this, but just a suggestion. It may narrow your choices a bit.

Thanks for all your input everyone, I've had to rule out Cakeology as there's a business with that name just a few miles away. I'm based in the UK and there are some regulations about having the same name as another company, but they dont really apply for small companies (unlimited).

I'm currently thinking Orange Blossom Cake Company, Happy Little Cake Company, Creative Cake Company or the Cake Whisperer icon_smile.gif

It depends on what your target audience is
If you are focussing on weddings I like Orange Blossom, it has an elegant sound to it.
But if its fun kuds birthday cake I like funky monkey or dragonfly

It helps to know where your focus will be before you name your company, so the name speaks to your customers about what you do.

Mmmm, I will mainly be doing weddings or corporate events, with some smaller orders, like for kids bdays on the side. I definitely want to convey elegant but fun in the name.....

I think I will go with one of these :

Orange Blossom Cake Company - elegant but there is a Cherry Blossom CC 20 miles away
Creative Cake Company - I want to convery that my cakes are contemporary rather than traditional and are thought about not just standard
Happy Little Cake Company - Happy Happy icon_smile.gif but too cutesy?
or
Cake Whisperer - sounds strange?!

Verify that the names are available, that the domain name with a .com is available, that it translates well and it's easy to say over the phone. That it's simple enough that you won't have people not knowing how to spell it and therefore not able to find your website...

People spell worse than you think.

Also... keep in mind promotional materials etc.... You don't want such a long name or big logo that in order to make it small enough to fit on things the text has to be illegible...

How about Cake-a-rific ? Names are hard. In our state we can register the name and no one else can use it. We came up with a good corporate name for a business and someone else wanted to use it too. They contacted us and wanted to buy the name from us. They only wanted to pay $200. We would have had to re-organize and file new corporate papers and get a new federal ID # etc etc etc. WAAAAAY too much work for $200. They were quite beligerant that we wouldn't sell it to them.

Be sure to CYA legally.

Too bad about Cakeology....I liked that one.

I don't like the "Company" at the end. I think Orange Blossom Cakes is good and I LOVE Happy Little Cakes. I think that's a really good one. When people are buying cakes it's for a happy occasion to make someone happy. That's perfect.

I don't like the other two at all. When I see "Creative" anything, I think it's not a creative name at all. When I hear Cake Whisperer all I think of is horse hair! And the reference doesn't work. What are you doing? Coaxing a well behaved cake out of a bad one? Just doesn't work for me.

Of the names, you suggested I like the Happy Little Cake Company but is it really necessary to use company behind it. Why not just Happy Little Cakes! It gives a great feeling and it sounds like I place I would enter to buy a cake. Good luck!!
