Does anyone use caramels such as Werther's as a filling in a cupcake? If I plop them in before baking will they harden back up after cooling and not be all that great of a filling?

I have never used Werthers caramels, but I have used the mini bite sized Milky Ways or Rolos in cupcakes, and both worked out well. The first time I did it though I pushed the candy into the batter and it sank to the bottom...now I just sit them on top of the batter before baking!
