I am going to make a cake covered in fondant, and wanted to know, can I use regular canned vanilla frosting (the kind you buy at the grocery store right next to the boxed cake mixes) to crumb coat my cake before applying the fondant, rather than using buttercream? Everyone always talks about using buttercream but I don't have much time and wanted to know if I could just used the pre-made canned icing instead (do they make canned buttercream?).
Thank you for your help!

You can. And technically, that stuff can also be called buttercream...even though it doesn't contain butter.

I wouldn't be too heavy handed with it, just a thin layer and then apply the fondant.

Are you selling the cake? If so, would you want to pay that kinda money on a fondant cake? If it were me it would take you just as long to go to the store and buy what you need for fresh icing than to buy it in a can and spend 10 minutes to make it when you get home. Aren't your customers worth 10 minutes and worth your name your putting on it? Just my perspective as a customer and a caker!

You can! I'd just put Chocolate Ganache underneath the fondant! wayyyyyyyyy easier and yummy icon_smile.gif
I learnt that from Sugarshack's method.

You can but in the same amount of time that it took to make your post, the homemade BC could have been done. My grandmother told me you can fool people with a box mix if you make your own frosting. (Sorry scratch bakers, I know it's not completely true but in many families it is.)

Thanks everyone! And just so you know this cake is for my daughter's 4th bday party (just decided I was going to make it using fondant to give it that smoother look). I don't think a bunch of 3 & 4 yr olds will be complaining if i use canned vanilla frosting rather than homemade buttercream, lol! I'm an amateur cake-maker, but yes if i were to make and sell cakes i would absolutely make my own buttercream icing! Can anyone recommend a good buttercream icing recipe?

I've done this before. It worked out fine. Not as tasty as buttercream but it was all right.

Indydebi's is good. I use that and my grandmothers, 1/2 cup fat (shortening, butter, or a mix of the two) one pound of confectioner's sugar, flavoring, and cream or water to desired consistency.

LOL...you're right, 3 & 4 year olds won't know the difference...they want it sweet.
