Well, it has come to my attention, because they told me, that I am grouchy when I do cakes. My family hates when it's time for me to do a cake. It's a toss up between the mess I make and me snapping when I shatter my gumpaste flowers on the floor. Anybody else have this problem? If so, any tips on how have you overcome the problem?

I have nothing to help you out with this other than I get the same way. I think it's just that you're concentrating and minor frustrations that might otherwise go unnoticed or slip by are multiplied because you don't have the time to deal with them.

I can't suggest anything to help but you're not alone. I get grumpy too. icon_wink.gif

I get super grumpy. I also have 2 and 3 year old boys that love to be helpers. If I try and do anything while they are in the house I get really stressed and snappy. I usually put them to bed and pull all nighters to eliminate stress. Though I am tired for a few days I find it helps to be able to work all alone.

You're not alone. It's been brought to my attention that my husband, my friends, and my neighbors all hate it when I'm working on a cake. I think it's because I take every cake I do very seriously and it frustrates me when others do not. They see it as just cake where as I see it as my reputation, my business, and someone else's very special event. That and I have a two boys, three and 11 months, and getting anything accomplished these days is like going extended deep sea diving. Everything takes longer than it should and I'll go days without getting enough sleep. My suggestions...tell them to leave you alone...cause it's not getting any better. Haha...good luck!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I have 3 and 6 years olds who love to "help"!!! Same for me, it's all nighter's I'm afraid. At least no one gets to witness the grump icon_lol.gif

I laughed when I read your post because I get the same way! I took a couple of months off during the Summer, so when I started back up again last week my husband wasn't very excited. In fact, I believe his exact words were, "oh joy...I just looooove cake season!" I thought his eyes were going to get stuck in the back of his head he was rolling them so hard!
I have a short fuse anyway, and then you add the cake mess, things not going as planned, and my 4 year old wanting to know where he can play with his playdough.....well, I'm sure you get the picture!
Sorry no words of wisdom from me in how to deal with it or make it better. I just try to control my temper by walking away for a few minutes.

I have a 14 & 9 yr old and a 13 month old baby so I know about that. But they can't leave me alone because I have an open floor plan and the baby can see me all the time. I could tell them to go to the beach or something but I just finished a cake that took 27 hours. I guess them spending a week at the beach is not a viable option, or is it?

You are not alone!

I was a travel agent for years. Everyone was massively happy when I said enough. There was a party involved when I finally said no more!

Then I started cakes, that I do for free. Now they want me to be a travel agent again.

Turns out I'm a bigger b**ch, than travel agency work ever made me.

I'd like to say I'm slightly anal. My family and friends say I'm major anal. Cakes do not bring out the best in me.

Wow - I'm glad I'm not the only one, I have almost adult kids - 17 and 19. When I'm doing cakes, it's always in the evening or weekend because I have a full-time job away from home. There are times when they actually have the nerve to ask "what's for supper?" I believe the look I give them says WTF? They then turn away and tell the other I'm in a bad mood because it's cake night. I ask them afterwards what happened to their healthy little fingers and hands that they couldn't figure out what to make for themselves at their age..... For the love of pete....... icon_rolleyes.gif

I used to get grumpy but I am a hobby baker and decided that if I'm not enjoying it, I shouldn't be doing this as a hobby.

That being said, I spent over an hour working on an appliqué today and came home and my housekeeper damaged it. Now I'm super grumpy!!!!

I haven't done many cakes, but I completely relate!
I think it is - "Give me my space - I am busy and I don't want to be interrupted, this is my time, my work, and I do take great joy in doing this as long as I don't have to stop and feed adult children and hubby - I'm concentrating right now"

Me too! I'm no pro, but I feel the pressure when a cake is due...especially during the final assembly. My kids are 11, 9 and 17 mo. I don't want my kids/ hubby to suffer for my hobby. I apologize when I blow my top and remind them that this is pressure I have put on myself and not their fault.

I budget a lot of extra time into every cake. That way when the baby simply will not hear of anyone but mommy holding her, I can step away without going insane. I still hate breaking my stride though. I let the kids know when I absolutely can not be disturbed- but mine are old enough to understand that. The big kids help entertain the baby during crunch time or I do it while she naps.

I am learning to just plan for little catastrophes and that helps me stress less when they happen.

I still lose it sometimes. icon_smile.gif At the moment I am 2 months pregnant and sooo sick, which makes me even shorter tempered. icon_sad.gif I hope you are able to find a balance for you and your family. At least you know you are not alone.

Blessings!

No, you are not alone. I have a 5 and 3 year old, and they know when mommy is caking it is time for them to play quietly in their rooms. I can handle them when I am baking, even assembling the cake, but when I'm decorating, they better GET OUT!!!!

My husband is a firefighter, so I try to work my big cake days around his schedule. That way he can pick them up from school and take them somewhere else for a few hours so I can decorate in peace. The poor guy can't even eat around me when I am caking. If he makes one false chew, slurp, crunch of the chip bag, or breaths heavily, it is off with his head!!!!! So see, he puts up with alot!!!!! My husband does not enjoy the big cake days, but luckily for me he likes me doing something that I love, so he deals with me.

My suggestion is to try to do as much as you can at night after the kids are in bed, and plan ahead. I also do all my fondant details at night or when the kids are in school. That way it is just me, my fondant, and the hum of my computer working out the details!!!

Good luck to you, and know that you are not alone! CAKE GRUMPIES UNITE!!!!!!

My girls know that if mommy is in the kitchen, not to talk to me and they are on there own. I finished my first wedding cake a couple of weeks ago and my husband took the girls out for the day and then I finished around 3:30 am. I actually enjoyed the house being quiet and did not miss the sleep..until a couple days later.

Yep my dh always says "I thought you loved doing cakes?" just a little sarcastic because his point... how can I love it if I'm grumpy?

But we too have a 3 year old in the house, my granddaughter. And she CAN'T leave me alone when I'm doing cakes. She always wants to help (which means eat the fondant till she's sick). Then when she really wants my attention, she'll grab something I've been working on for hours and squish it, and of course I'll have to start over. How do you not get grumpy about that? I do realize though that she just wants some gramma time, so I try really hard to wait until she's sleeping for cake time.

Otherwise, if everyone leaves me alone and I don't have to rush, I'm perfectly happy and I can get into the cake zone and I really do love doing cakes! icon_biggrin.gif

ahhh i usually work alone.. no one is permitted in the kitchen.. and if they happen to get in the way they will regret it icon_razz.gif
recenrly my cousin has started to come along and help out "i told her to come on her own risk"
main reason i get annoyed by people
1- they are in the way "when i want to get my butter cream from the fridge, or when i want to check on my cake in the over"
2- they give comments when its not due "this doesnt look like a care !! of course it doesnt it only have the first coat of fondant i didnt add the accents yet!!"
3-i mess up and take "and too embarrased to show it" so yeah that one is my fault im a perfectionist!!
4-KIDS i have my autistic nephew living with us in the house.. so he really cant help but being curious and annoyed by anything new or different.. but this is where i really try my best to be calm and not react and of course yell and someone to come and get him!!

how to overcome it..
well just be patiant and try to think that they dont know any better!!

Oh I am SO relieved to read all the responses here in this post!! I thought it was just me. The biggest fight we ever got into (me and DH) was when he told me he just didn't think that cakes should be my thing. I lost it. I am already hyper critical of my work and insecure about my skills. His comment was in reference to the grumpy, sometimes crazy person I become because of cake. We have a 2 year old, and I ONLY do cake stuff after he is in bed. I just can't focus 100% on baking/decorating while keeping an eye on my son. And I would never be able to tolerate having him underfoot in the kitchen with me. I get frustrated very easily, especially with myself, when I screw something up. And yes, I too have a rep for being very anal. icon_redface.gif I'm working hard on planning further in advance, doing as much as possible earlier in the week, and being more organized.

Oh, and I am so happy to know that other people are pulling all nighters!! My husband thinks I am crazy.

I'm probably the worst (unfortunately for my family). I enjoy baking and creating cakes. I'm married with a 14yr old son and 6yr old daughter. But, I'm bipolar and have chose to stay off my medicine because I don't like the way it makes me feel like a zombie. I can be happy one minute and the devil in a minute. My husband is gladly helping me open my shop icon_smile.gif
