Hi Everyone!
I have been getting several questions about how I paint on my cakes, so I thought I would write a little post about it.

The main thing you need to know is to start with smooth fondant, get good quality brushes, and liquid food coloring. I use airbrush color (because it is already a perfect consistency) but you can always use regular wilton gel colors and water them down a little with vodka or clear extract. I like to use a big ceramic plate to mix colors on because if they dry out, you can always add water to them again.

When I am doing several colors I always start with the lightest and move to darkest. If I am working on multiple images that are the same or similar- I will start with either the outline or lightest color and paint them all. (ex. the photo below had 8 white circles for the trees- I started with the light orange and painted the orange on all 8 before moving on to the pink, dark pink, green, etc.) This is a really nice time saver, and it will make your work more consistant. Also, usually by the time you are finished with the last peice, the first will be dry and ready to move on to the next color.

The main thing to be aware of is that your colors need to be dry if you wish to layer colors. If the bottom color is wet, you will just create a goopy mess if you add too much liquid to fondant at a time.

Other than that- just go for it! I will often use a (clean) roll of painters tape to section off fondant when painting too. This works really well for shading.

I hope that helps a little. Please let me know if you have more questions.
