WOW...that looks like a lot of work! Is it going to be that size too or just a couple tiers? I would buy pre-made flowers to save you some time and stress!

Premade flowers is a must. From what i can tell the person that made this cake used premade flowers anyways. Im mostly worried about the hand drawings. Im pretty sure i can do it i just song know how to start. (Sigh)

Beautiful cake. I think I would start like any other cake. As for the decorating of it, are you comfortable hand painting ? If you are kind of comfortable but not very confident, I would suggest using stamps in the shapes of the flowers, etc and LIGHTLY stamp the fondant, once you have it on the cake, of course, then I would literally trace the stamped area with the black food coloring mixed with lemon extract or other alcohol. (Preferably the LEMON extract, because it has the highest pure alcohol rating of anything you can legally buy, thus, making the black dry faster)
As for the flowers, I agree with Kellbella, use silk ones. You can find really decent ones at the dollar store, Wal-Mart, etc. Sorry, as for whatever that is in between the tiers that is black, I can't tell. However, IF it is fondant/gumpaste flowers, switch to silk. If it is something else that is easy, do that, but if not, you may want to do something simple and quick, yet elegant by making thin black gumpaste "tissue paper" that you can stamp with some sort of pattern and add some inexpensive and inedible stick on bling (you can buy at Wal-mart or Michael's, I believe. Just make sure you let the client know that the stones are inedible.) And, put that in between the layers where there's supposed to be the black stuff.

After you cover your cake with fondant, paint it and let it dry completely before trying to stack. Once dry, Stack and add flowers, ("tissue"??) in between layers. Finish as you would any other stacked cake.... And, don't' cry!! You'll make the black run!! And, once that happens, it's a nightmare!! Good Luck. You will do GREAT!!!

Boy...Foxiecakes...I LOVE LOVE LOVE the stamp idea. I'm not personally an ar-teeest...so, I'll have to try that one. Great tip! Lemme' just say I'm not a caker extraordinaire....but, I have been getting some more volume in my cookie orders. Some of the cookies I do have several steps and I've had to map out my week lately.

Sooooo....one thing that helped me was to make an actual time line. I use a spreadsheet. If you are visual, you may like to try it out. Google docs has a free spreadsheet to use. Actually, type out the days of the week in the columns and place tasks under each day. It may help to compartmentalize each task into a time period so you don't get overwhelmed.

What can be done way ahead of time? Materials shopping & perhaps pre-arranging the flowers can be done two weeks ahead? You can use your cake pans as an actual "eye-ball" guide for how your flowers will look on the finished stacked cake. And, of course the cake board. If you have room to freeze your cake, you may or may not prefer to bake, wrap and freeze your cake layers ahead of time.

As the week approaches before it's due...map out your fondant mixing/coloring, and final baking. Then...just make sure you have plenty of time...according to your level of skill...for the cake assembly & fondant covering. (I still freak over my BC application. I haven't found my groove I guess yet....so, it takes me longer than some people) AND...the most important part. Have back up fondant & PLENTY of time to paint on your cakes.

You'll do great! I read once on CC that you should just think of each cake as separate. It makes it easier to tackle. I agree. It feels less intimidating when you are dealing with one cake at a time.

icon_smile.gif No worries, you'll be fine!!!

You are BOTH welcome about the stamping idea!! I find that it really helps me! And, Gladys, look for the silicone stamps. They come in a package and usually have different "themed" designs. I think Martha Stewart has a collection. Also, please be sure to post a photo of it when you're done!! I can't wait to see how it comes out!! By the way ladies, I started a new thread earlier about how whenever I am in ANY store, I am always looking for "out of the box" items to use in decorating cakes. Please look that one up too. I left some other ideas on how to save money. And, Please, if you have any items that you use but that works for you please share with us!!

Here's the link to the thread

This is not an official quote, but I heard a cake judge say cake decorators know how to function under pressure. You obviously proved that point. The cake is beautiful and well executed!
