OK! I just got asked to do a steak cake for TOMORROW!!!! It's for my BIL, so I'm not too stressed but still want to do the best I can. They want a "cooked steak with bacon and pepperoni" on top! I've never done anything like this before. I don't know if I should paint the cake or if I should color my fondant... any suggestions would be FANTASTIC!
Definitely paint it. That way you leave the fondant white where there is fat and the steak will stay "shiny" and greasy looking. Yum.
I would probably do a little of both. color the fondant to cover the shape. what kind of steak are you doing? if you are doing a t bone you could make the bone part after you have the solid steak color on the cake the cut out the shape out more fondant you can stipple the marrow in with food coloring. than on whole cake you paint a skewer or something long and skinny like the bars on the grill with a mixture of chocolate brown and black food coloring and than lay it across the cake to make grill marks. on the out side of the steak you could use some more white fondant and make it look like fat. than use some of that black and brown on it to look like its been on the grill as well. maybe a little of black on the small tips of the bones. ( i probably would put the fat on before the grill marks) i put that out of order!
3G- I'm very excited! I hope it looks yummy and not too cartoonish!
Momvarden- Thanks soooo much! Great tips...I'm glad I came to check before starting on this!!
This cake got pushed back to Saturday so I've been surfing the net of "steak cakes" and I saw this... would you all say this is "painted" on?? And how can I go about getting that glossy effect.
I'm also needing to do a couple stripes of bacon and a few pepperoni's. Any suggestions?
This is one weird cake I've been asked to do! Lol

This sounds really interesting and actually not very appetizing. Who would ever want a steak cake? That just doesn't make any since?

Cakes that don't look like cakes are quite popular. Really doesn't matter what true object they look like. My favorite cakes of all!
My Mom asked my Dad what he wanted for his birthday and he said, "A Ribeye!" So, she asked me to do a ribeye steak ;) Makes sense to me and I think it's cute, lol

AYou can get it shiny like that with confectioner's glaze, brushed on. You can make your own by mixing equal parts corn syrup and water together. I use this for making leaves shiny all the time.
I made a grill cake with a steak a few years ago and I painted the steak, started with white fondant and left the bone parts lighter and gave the meat parts several layers of colour to get the depth. I would do it that way again, but probably be a bit neater having learned a fair bit since then lol.
Good luck with it!!!!
