I am making a figurine of pippi longstocking and I'm trying to do the hair. How in the world do I get the pigtails to stick straight out but still stay attached to the head?? I do not want to start this head all over but I'm stuck. Can anyone give me some tips or ideas. Thanks!!

Have you considered making a braid and then sticking a toothpick in her head and in the braid, thus connecting them?

Depending on how big her head is, could you use toothpicks, skewers or thin spaghetti. If you make the braid around one of those items, leaving excess so that you could place in her head. I hope that makes sense. Just my thoughts, HTH.

Maybe if you make her head with the plaits and lay it in something that won't flatten it while it dries.

I'd use toothpicks but try letting the braid and the head dry before attaching them.

I have tried all of those suggestions and they are not working. When I braid the fondant onto wire and then insert it into her head, the wire just spins the other direction and the braid is then upside down. I can't get them to stay put. The more I mess with her head the more smushed her head becomes.

If the wire does not have the tape on it then it would be too slick to stay in place. Letting the head dry before attaching the braids will keep the head from smushing. I always let my heads dry then wet a toothpick and insert it. Good luck!

You may want to dip the ends of the wire/spaghetti in chocolate before you put the pony tail on and hold in place until it dries. Any extra chocolate should "pop" off once dry or you can add a "hair tie" to cover the joint.

I have come to the conclusion that I can not make figurines!!! Everything keeps falling off or breaking!! I am about ready to scream. I think I'm going to have to start all over. I wish I could find a tutorial that was step by step to walk me thru this process.

Aww... awestervelt, you definitely need a break from your figure.

There are definitely tutorials out there on how to make figures... would be along the same lines... youtube has an abundance of helpful tutorials. Visuals usually tend to work best for me...

this is what i suggest having had plenty of problems with my figures. i would say take the wire that you are using poke a spot in the head where you would like them to come out of let the head sit and get hard, now you have a place to put the braids when they are both dry. using what ever glue you use to put your pieces together place them in the holes. find something to hold them in position until they dry. as far as your braids twisting on the wires use your glue on the wire first. i don't know how big this is but if its just to sit on the top of the cake that maybe try this.

I have an idea to build it like a Lego system.

Make the head an leave 1/4 off the top. Then make the braids and flatten the end that would attached to the head like a nickel, then you can stack them when dry. then cover it with Lego with the rest of the hair and bangs.

I hope this makes sense.
