Hi, all! I am sponsoring an event for a local mom's group. It's a "Mad Men" themed cocktail party. I told the organizer of the event I had never watched the show and needed ideas. She said the show is set in the 60's and the character's drink alot of alcoholic beverages. We decided to go with the cocktail theme. I am making a small martini themed topsy-turvy cake and some mini-cupcakes. I use a commercial mix, so the flavoring would need to either replace the water or the vanilla in the recipe. Does anyone know of any good extracts/flavorings? I make a really good Chocolate Guiness Stout Cake, but that's not really a cocktail type thing. I think I can make a White Russian flavor, what else? 2 or 3 more ideas would be great! What do you think about Appletini or Cabernet? How would you do those? Thankyou for your help!
I'm pretty sure you could do pina colada or margarita fairly easily. What about Kahlua & cream?

A Harvey Wallbanger cupcake would be really good and I think I saw a cake recipe for Cosmopolitan ones. Bobwonderbuns has a link to the most amazing list of cake recipes, EVER in his signature line. If I can find it, I'll come back and post the link.
apple martini is my fav!
Got the most compliments when I brought them to work a while back and they certainly went quickly!!
I recently wrote a book about this very thing! Liquor laced baked goods including cakes. www.topshelfbaker.com
Good choices using a mix would include Mimosa Cake, Hard Lemonade Cake, Banana Bourbon, or Bailey's White Chocolate cake. All of them translate well into cupcakes.

Those are all great ideas! I am going to order you book, but no time for that for this project. I'm pretty creative and have a good understanding of the chemistry of baking, but for some reason I was drawing a blank on this one. I was trying to think of "retro" cocktails and I got nothin'!

Would you mind telling what you used to flavor them? Thankyou!

Wow, thankyou! I am printing all 41 pages right now. My mix is a commercial one, but I think I can adapt most of those. I can't put sour cream in this mix- it would be TOO moist. Maybe those substitutions could be for the oil instead? I will have to play around with it. BTW, I don't even know what is in a Harvey Wallbanger or what it tastes like- ? It does sound very retro though- I'll check it out.
I think there is a recipe in bobwonderbuns' link for appletini cupcakes. They are flavored with apple pucker.
Not at all Rachel....
I cant look up the exact recipe now, but if you need more info, please PM me and ill happily give it to you.
I do remember that I swaped out the liquid in my white cake recipe for Apple pucker and vodka. The ratio would be based on the result you're looking for. For example 1/2 & 1/2 would work perfectly, or 1/4 & 3/4 if you want it more apple-y or more vodka-y
Then you have some choices: you can either make caramel bc, or make vanilla bc and stripe the bag with caramel or even duce de leche would work well OR you can drizzle the caramel on the top of the bc.
For an extra added touch, you can make a little fondant apple , or even a martini glass out of fondant. The possibilities are only limited to your imagination.
You can do this just as easily with a box mix, or an extended WASC recipe too.
Like I said, if you have any additional questions, i'll be happy to help you. Just ask!!

I just got your book in the mail today...it looks great, I can't wait to try some of the stuff. My parents LOVE Southern Comfort so I'll start with those.
on that show they pretty much drink scotch or rum. Replace the water with rum and make rum cakes!
Woohoo! I hope you all enjoy it! I'm making the beer and bacon brownies, chocolate chip stout cake, margaritas and slammers next week for a show. All my favs!
Finally...! Someone read my mind and wrote a book. I can't wait to get it!
I have three books that combine alcohol and baking: The Boozy Baker, Booze Cakes, and Top Shelf Baker and of those I would recommend the Top Shelf Baker as it has the best variety and most creative recipes. The other two are good too if you're crazy like me and need 3 entire bookshelves for all your cookbooks. My husband has threatened to put a "cookbook buying moratorium" on me.
