Glycerin is used to add stretch and pliability to fondant. It can soften stiff fondant without causing it to be sticky. Glycerin is also great for softening gumpaste. It will also thin dried Wilton jar food colors.

As for MMF, I don't know which recipe to suggest. Look in the recipe section and try the top rated recipe. You may have to play with it to get it to the consistency that you like.

I prefer to add a little to fondant than to heat the fondant up in the microwave to get soft. That actually makes it worse, not better. Glycerin is awesome.

I use Mac's Moms buttercreme MMF in the recipe section on this site...it uses glycerine and it makes the MMF very easy to work with. HTH!

Is there another place besides craft stores to get glycerine, i.e drugstores?? I get tired of running to the store everytime I need some.

This isn't cake-related but if you ever have an extra bit of glycerine left you can use it to make bubble mix for the children.

# 1/2 gallon of water
# 1/2 cup dishwashing liquid (Joy or Dawn works best.)
# 1/4 cup glycerine

1. Mix ingredients together in a wide container.
2. If using immediately, try not to agitate the solution. Foamy solution does not make the best bubbles. If the solution become too foamy, wait for it to settle.
3. Find straws, tea strainers, funnels, sieves, etc. for making bubbles. Dip these in the bubble solution.
4. Blow or wave bubbles into the air.
5. Store any leftover solution in a a close-able container. The bubble solution will get better with age.

(From Suite101: How to Make Your Own Bubble Blowing Solution)

I've tried it and it really works well.

You can also use your leftover glycerine to moisturise any rough bits on your elbows or knees.

I also use it when my Wilton food coloring gets gooey. Put a drop or 2 in and stir it with a toothpick and it is like new.

GLYCERINE is mainly added as it retains moisture [as a humectant] which prevents excessive hardening. Minorly, it works as an emulsifier to provide lubrication that improve "smoothness", and it helps prevent deter crystallization.
