Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you all know I received The Mat today, and I LOVE IT!

I ordered it Monday and received it here in Brooklyn, NY on Friday.

I made some fondant to which I think I added too much gum-tex. The fondant was rock hard so I had to microwave it because I had no time to make a fresh batch.

Even after microwaving it, kneading the crap out of it and adding Crisco, it was still pretty tough. If I had to roll it out without The Mat, I know for sure: a) it would have taken forever to get it thin enough to work with; and b) when it came time to pick it up to transfer, it would surely have crumbled.

Well not so with The Mat! It made my life so much easier today.

If you have any questions about it, let me know and I will try to answer though I have only used it once so far.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

The mats are each about 30"x30" in case anyone was wondering. I only used one of them today folded in half.

me again....lol You know what? My hubby goes to Nashville pretty often on business and I am thinking I might just ride along with him one of these times and take a class there. I have yet to find anyone in the Charlotte area that offers classes that impress me.
I go to the bakeries whenever I can and look at their finished products in the case and in their books but most of it just doesn't strike me as "wow, I want to learn from them".
Does that make sense?

That blown/pulled sugar class looks like something I would LOVE to take!

I got mine this week. I confess, I had seconds thoughts before ordering it, thinking that perhaps the vinyl that is sold at Walmart would be cheaper and do the same thing. But the words "food safe" were haunting me. That's what convinced me. I would rather pay a few extra dollars and have the piece of mind that the product I am working with is manufactured specifically for food. I tried it with some gumpaste and it worked like a charm. Tomorrow I will try it with MMF. I don't regret the investment. And I love the storage case. Nice and clean and dust free and no wrinkles.

I ordered the Mat yesterday. I can't wait to try it! I'm hoping it will make working with fondant easier for me. I'll report how it goes when I make a cake with it soon! icon_biggrin.gif

I have used...or shall I say attempted to use...mine twice. The first time it ROCKED...though after the first batch, it seemed to be a magnet for EVERYTHING in the air. I managed with it though and it turned out awesome...

I tried to use it again this week and no luck. I ended up doing the messy way with corn starch and pwd sugar on the counter. Was NOT happy...was SOOOO close to calling. My fondant would not roll at all. It was soft enough...for sure. AND...the mat kept rolling up and creasing with my rolling pin. Very frustrating.

I am going to give it another try this week for my SIL baby shower cake. I gave it a real good washing and hung it dry, then rolled it up like they say and put it in the container it was mailed in. I have never folded it...and I put shortening on it before the first use just like it said. I really don't know what to do about the fondant not rolling out. Even DH tried to get it to move and it wouldnt budge past a certain point...and it was WAYYYYYYYY too thick to put on the cake. Had a LOOOOONNNNGGGG way to go.

Guess we will see next time. It better work better or I might throw something!

Yes, but your vinyl from WalMart ISN'T FOOD SAFE..........The MAT is food safe.

Sort of the same reasons we changed over from using paraffin to paramount crystals, vegetable shortening instead of lard, why we don't store food in plastic bags that aren't made for food, etc.

The food safe issue caught my attention too. I also have a big piece of Vinyl that I have used from watching the video it does not seem as pliable as the Mat does. I am going to order next week icon_smile.gif

People may put the vinyl on their tables, but then they put their food on a plate and put the plate on the table.

As for rolling out on the counter, the counter does not have industry-side products like the cheap walmart vinyl does, and probably more seeing how it is made on China. I'm talking about things like metal, glass, lead and other stuff that they figured must be okay because people eat off of plates and not the table cloth.

As for me I would rather give 15 dollars to a small USA company with the product made in the USA, than 3 dollars to wallie world. The extra 12 dollars will be a better investment if you look at the bigger picture. Sometimes there is more to think about than just cost.

I am just curious how you know the product is "made in the U.S.A"? Looked around and cannot find anything about what makes this product food safe nor where or how its made it is made. As Sweet Wise seems to be a bakery it is doubtful they are making vinyl, which means it would come from somewhere else.

I say contact SweetWise and ask them about the manufacturing of their product, and I'm pretty sure they can answer all of your concerns/questions.

You know, the poster from SweetWise had posted several times about their desire to find food safe vinyl.

They acutally had store-bought vinyl analyzed and realizing that it wasn't food safe, they had a food safe product custom made.

After testing, they went the extra step to have it double polished so that it would be virtually non-stick.

I have no doubt that there was significant cost in testing and development and they surely had to have a minimum order for the first run of the product. All of this costs $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I'm certain that no one is trying to pull the wool over any of our eyes.

As for tablecloths--they don't have to be food safe because, as another poster pointed out, they are not meant for food to be served on them. A plate is supposed to be the barrie between the cloth and the food--that way, the printing on the cloth can contain lead, cadmium, etc...............

I love fondant if it's made correctly. And many of my cake requests are fondant covered cakes and yep, they do eat it icon_lol.gif
I actually have one customer that wants the fondant scraps and her husband eats it plain. Now, that isn't something I would do ...just saying... icon_biggrin.gif

Thank you Sweet Wise for all that valuable information!

I'm LOVING THE MAT! even more now that I know I've purchased a product made in the USA and with such caring standards.

And to those that have doubts about fondant eaters ... since I switched from Wiltons to homemade MMF, I can't stop people from eating it! It's unbelievable.

I recently made a cake covered in fondant grapes. The grapes were coated in petal & luster dusts so they had a sparkle to them, and I imagined a "dusty" taste. Figuring people wouldn't eat something that had a sparkly coating, I didn't think twice.

The first comments I got were, "Wow! What were those grapes made of? They were delicious." LOL! I couldn't believe it, so I asked my husband to try a leftover grape, thinking seriously, they must taste dusty. Nope! He loved it!
