Without luster dust what can I use to make my gumpaste shine? I have heard oil spray, corn syrup and vodka mix, gelatin mix, crisco. ANy help would be great. I made a mask for a helemt cake and I want it to shine not sparkle. THanks so much. asap would be great. thumbs_up.gif

Edible lacquer works but it is really sticky.....or maybe try Cake Boss method of steaming it but I have never understood how the fondant doesn't become sticky or soft doing that.

i don't understand steaming a cake either...

what i usually do is rub a thin layer of crisco over my mmf if i want it to shine. i use a paper towel and the key is to make sure you don't leave streaks of dry or put too much crisco. this effect usually works beautifully =D

A cake decorator once told me that she uses cook and spray to make her items shine....
I made some leaves, that looked dull and had my kettle boiling and took them and just waved them past the steam and they were completely transformed, from dull to shiny..

does the edible laquer dry hough or does it stay sticky? the oil sounds like a good idea or the vodka mixed with corn syrup. Anyone tried the vodka one?

I LOVE the vodka mixed with corn syrup. Has very little stickyness to it when it dries. Also not brush marks. I don't think any method is going to completely DRY. I've steamed, used pam, used corn syrup with water.......The corn syrup and vodka, for me, works best.

I've used the vodka corn syrup on the wine bottle in my pics and it worked great. I used 50/50 and it took a couple of days to dry. It was tacky not sticky after 24 hrs. Next time I think I'll use a little more vodka to increase the drying timeicon_smile.gif

Also I colored my vodka/corn syrup mixture to darken the bottle. It was a little streaky when I applied it but it dried fine.

PAM COOKING/BAKING SPRAY!!!! This stuff is the BEST!! You can look at my pic's I used it on the Louis Vuitton {Purse, it worked wonderfully! I sparyed a bit in a cup and "painted" it on with a soft brush, to take down the shine a bit I dabbed with a soft paper towel. This was the first time I used this method, and I am SOLD!!!! Try it!!!!

i rub in vegetable shortening-works great and also helps if there is slight cracking in the fondant on corners! thumbs_up.gif

Thanks everyone... very helpful. I did use pam once and liked it. I would love to try the vodka though but I don't have 2 days to let it dry. The spray I used on a ring so it was so small. I could not tell how it would be on something big. I would hate to have streaks.
I will try painting it on. THnaks everyone... Multilayered - great name, very funny.

I painted on the pam. It worked great. A bit yellow but nice shine in the end. Just the white was tinted.

I use the steam method. Don't hold to close and not for very long. Works great!

I use the steam method also. I use the spout of a tea kettle but you have to make sure to not get the object to close or steam it for to long.

I have used clear vanilla extract, spray, crisco and pretty much everything but what works really great is Patron outta the freezer and just brush it on. Straight! It dries in a few hours and is not tacky or anything... alcohol dries and is not consumed! lol

will try next time. I did the vodka painted on part of it but I must have been a bit heavy handed bc it made the fondant softer distort a bit.

When you alcohol, does that give the cake the alcohol taste?
