Can I use both oven racks and still bake evenly?

I've got three cakes to make this week (unusual for me) and I usually just use one rack in the center of the oven. Can I use both racks? It's just a standard oven, and I want to make sure they bake evenly. Thanks!!

I often bake more than one cake at a time in my oven, however I have found the bottom rack is hotter in that area of the oven than the top. So if i have a bigger cake I normally put that at the bottom and smaller at the top. They still bake evenly you just need to be aware that different areas of your oven may be different temps. A good idea is to get an oven thermometer - which is what I did - and put it on each rack at a time to see if there was a temperature difference and there was. HTH icon_biggrin.gif

Yikes allaboutcakeuk! You're my kind of person... I never thought about moving the thermometer to different areas. Now I'll try that. I was always curious about baking more than one cake. I read once here on a threat that someone uses the 3 racks to bake 36 cupcakes at the same time!

Maybe I'll get two oven thermometers and I'll put one on each rack to test! Thank you!

I bake more then one at a time in mine also. I put my larger ones on the bottom rack. I notice that they take longer to bake when baking so many at once. I think that when you put to many in the oven at one time it brings the temp of the oven down. But they bake ok.

I sure do! The way I figure it is, I'm turning my oven on, so I better be utilizing all of its space that I can icon_biggrin.gif

But, I also have a convection oven (my best friend!) that has never failed me yet.

But even if I didn't, you bet I'd be still using that space!

(I have a three tier stacked wedding cake, a 3D sculped cake, a sheet cake, and a 3D Nintendo cake to do for the 16th, definately using ALL my oven! heehee)
