After about 4 years of playing around with fondant, I finally had the nerve to contact a bakery about my figures. I was told it's a good possiblity they would be interested. The guy is supposed to call me the first of the week to set up an appointment to meet.

At first I was very excited and now I am getting really very nervous. I spent today making a few figures to take with me as examples. I made a couple of turkeys, pumpkin, witch, ghost, pirate cupcake toppers and have a few other things I had already made that I will probably take. I also have an album with photos. I guess the nervousness comes in when I think about discussing the details. I have a feeling it's probably going to be a waste of my time. I'm thinking they are not going to want to pay what I think they're worth. I am definitely not going to give them away! It's a really nice little local bakery and I would love to be able to work something out with them. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it goes! Wish me luck!

I went to a big local bakery and asked about a cake with a topper on it , They said they didnt carry anything like that and not plastic ones either except for kids birthday kits. She told me they could make a item from fondant but it would be $50.00 ( I laughed and said ..just a small one) she said yes $50.00 fondant is expensive and we have to make something you like and the time involved. ) just so you know... also yours are GREAT

Congrats!! I have a little bit of advice..make sure you have a price in mind of what you'd like to be paid per piece. Don't expect them the give you a figure first, know your price and tell them. Also you need to know you most likely will not get exactly what the figures are worth the bakery needs to make a profit as well. Most business are happy with a mark-up of 30% (ex: you sell them a figure for $10 they will want to sell it for at least $13) Also know what they are truly worth so you can tell them what the resale value is. Do some quick research online and see what comparable figures are selling for so you have a base value and research to back up your claims of worth. Always start with a "negotiable" price ask a little more than you expect to get, leave room for them to talk you down a bit they'll feel like they are getting a "deal" and you won't have to take a loss. Thanks everyone for the good wishes and the great advice. I know I need to sit down and make a price list before I go. It's difficult in that to this point, pretty much everything I've been making is custom. I make them as I need them for a family wedding, birthday, etc. I know I won't be able to sell them to a bakery for the same price I would be able to sell them to a direct customer. I just want to be sure I don't get myself into a situation where I am selling my pieces too low. I need to make it worth it for myself or what's the point.

We also have a small Farmers Market in town. I'm almost wondering if that's a better choice for me. I could sell cupcake toppers and get my name out there for custom orders that might come my way! It's just so hard to decide which way to go with it.

I think the Farmer's Market is definitly a better bet for you. I seriously doubt that a bakery will be willing to pay what you are worth. I think you are better cutting out the middle man and selling directly to the customer. However, don't discount the bakery though, you never know, may be there is something you can work out with them too
