I usually use the BC golden vanilla box mix for my wasc recipe. Ive been making it that way for the last two years, but the last 3 or 4 times I made the recipe, the flavor seemed off. Even the color looks slightly paler and the flavor seems to be missing something. Seems a little bland. Now, I dont know if its just my tastebuds since Im feeling a tiny bit under the weather, AND pregnant (lol), so it very well could just be me, but has anyone who uses the BC box mixes regularly noticed any difference?

Ok, maybe I'm not loosing my mind!! I have not used the BC Golden Vanilla, but I've noticed the White mixes aren't as tasty--asked my son, he said it tasted fine, but I swear it is different. More of a "flour" taste ---how would you describe it??

kansaslaura you are 100% right. My daughter and I just made a white cake and it was tasteless. We added the extra egg and pudding as normal too.

Seems they are getting cheap with ingredients and cutting back on vanilla (or using a less quality type). I use DH and so far they haven't changed anything that I can taste. I also add extra extract to my cakes along with other enhancers.

You know, it is so good to hear you say that! lol. It just tastes bland to me. The golden vanilla used to have a nice vanilla flavor, and it almost tastes more closely to white cake now. Or at least that is how it seems to me. I even added a little extra vanilla extract to the batter this time and it didnt help much. Maybe they are getting cheap with their ingrediants. Big mistake if they are. They will loose my business if that is the case because Im just not liking what Im tasting, and Ive been using no other brand except for BC for the last 2 years. Soooo....hmm. If this really is the case Im gonna have to switch. icon_sad.gif

I've been doctoring BC for several years and have always had an outstanding result with the white---until recently. Even with the sour cream, vanilla, pudding, etc it has NO flavor.. it's flat. I'm getting ready to tell them what I think and ask them what the heck is going on!

I just sent a note to them on the contact site for BC.

I actually picked up a Pillsbury and DH white mix the other day because I can't figure out what to do with the BC. White is the flavor I sell the most of--I know it's boring and all, but it has been SOOO good people really love it!!

BC used to have a Sour Cream White which I swore by, it was so good, but it's been off the market for a long time icon_sad.gif

I hope you all drop a note to them as well, maybe if CC gets out in force they'll listen. I wish they'd just raise the price 10 cents or whatever instead of screwing around like this! icon_mad.gif

Here is the link you can rate and comment on the mixes as well. I've commented on the White so far. http://www.bettycrocker.com/products/supermoist-cakes/products/supermoist%20cake%20mix

So get out there, comment on this link, and the link in the other post is for contacting the company with your complaint.

Thank you for those links! Im pretty bummed about this. I agree. Ill pay the extra few cents if they would just put the flavor back in the mix! lol. People loved my vanilla cake, now Im worred to put out a product like this. I tried duncan hines before and I honestly just liked the BC better. But if they dont get their act together, Ill have to find another mix. Hey.....Ive never tried the pillsbury mixes before. How do they compare?

I used to use Pillsbury, haven't for a long time. I'm going to try to get that one I picked up baked in the next day or so and I'll post what I find.

I'm glad you're going to respond to those links. Something needs to get their attention.

Ok, this explains a lot. I just used BC white for WASC and flavored it lemon (needed white b/c I WAS going to tint it but then forgot dunce.gif ). Usually I get a nice bright lemon flavor, this one barely has any taste, just the barest hint, and I always "over flavor". I thought I was going crazy!

I don't like Pillsbury at all. Every time I tried using Pillsbury the cake crumbles and falls apart. I will only use it for cupcakes and it has to be really cheap for me to even consider buying it.

If I need to use a box mix, I usually use DH - I have found the flavour to be wonderful! For a quick golden vanilla, I actually use their golden butter recipe:
1 box DH golden butter recipe
1 stick butter, softened
1 C whole milk
4 eggs
1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Comes out tasting like a scratch cake!

I make at least 3 WASC cakes a month with their white cake mix - and each time my husband begs me to do an extra 6 inch so he can enjoy for the weekend. Its his new favourite flavour! So for me, DH takes the cake!

I don't really use BC cake mixes, and if I can't find BC, I'll use pillsbury (usually good for cupcakes - so so with the actual cakes). Hope that helps!

When I got home this afternoon this was in my e-mail from General Mills.
This doesn't explain why other flavors are having the same problem.. I smell a rat!

Damn! I don't often use cake mix, but when I need a vanilla cake, BC Golden Vanilla is my go-to mix! And it's so darn hard to find here, to begin with. Now I'm going to have to improvise!

Thanks for the heads-up on this!

hmm...I dont know about that. Like you said, other flavors are having issues. Im still wondering if it's just my pregnancy taste buds. lol. And Ive got a cold....sooo. Hmm. But Ive been using this for 2 years, and I bake it at least once a weekend and its always been the same until the last 4 batches I made. Im out of mix now, and when I get some more and try it next weekend I think Ill have my answer.

I actually wanted to give it another weekend to see if it really was the mix, or if it was my cold, or just a fluke. Well, I tried lemon, white, and vanilla, and they are all super bland. It really is different. I dont care what they say, its not just a bad batch because its more than one flavor. Im really dissapointed because this has been my product of choice for 3 years and now I have to change. Im going to write them right now.

I emailed them. If I get a response Ill let you all know what they had to say.

BTW, when I used the lemon mix, I did a double batch using the wasc recipe. Added two lemon puddings, and a dram of lorann lemon. It tasted a little dull. The flavors used to be so rich that I never even needed to add extract, but here I had lemon cake, with lemon pudding, and lemon extract. You would THINK that would be enough, but it really wasnt enough to give it a good, vibrant flavor.

When I do vanilla, there is almost nothing I can do to get it to taste good. I have to add several tsp of madagascar bourbon vanilla to get any kind of flavor to it. Even then, it doesnt taste like it used to. I dont know what kind of flavors they used in their vanilla so its hard to get it to taste like it did. Maybe it needs some butter flavor or something.

Today I got a coupon for one free mix and $1. off a General Foods Product. icon_confused.gif Yea, I want more bland mixes!

I know things have changed, they're saying no, but they're just bland and flat---and it's not just one batch like they claim if you all are finding the same things with other flavors as well! Please keep writing in, they'll get the message if enough of us complain!!!

Wow, good info to know. I am normally a faithful Duncan Hines person. But, decided to try the BC Golden Vanilla about a month ago at the request of my daughter for her bday. It seemed ok but a bit bland. Next couple of times, I decided to use them again and doctored it up but it still came out kinda bland, no matter what flavors I added. I will definitely go back to Duncan Hines. However, I plan on contacting them anyway.

Thanks for the heads up!

Huh. I know EXACTLY where the corp offices are, maybe should run over there and give Mr. Tom a piece of our minds? icon_smile.gif

Yeah right, that place is locked down like Fort Knox, they have EVERYTHING you could possibly need to leave the office for on site so no employee has to leave to run errands or knock off early (Dr, Dentist, Dry Cleaners...). Kenw someone who worked there, they pay really well but your personal life suffers for it.

Apparently they have to cut back on ingredients to pay for it all!

huh. wonder if they are hiring...lol! Oh well. my bet is they will change it back. Loosiung business due to nasty cake mixes isnt going to do them any good. Now all they've done is hurt themselves, and even if they do change their recipe back, they would have to do some serious advertising to try to get back the customers they've lost. Bad move on their part.

And I agree about trying to make it better with adding ingrediants....I use it as the base for my wasc recipes, and it seems like I can add flavors all i want, but it still doesnt taste like a good quality cake after that. Still bland for some reason.

Sooooo...for the 22nd that will be my first time using DH on a 3 tiered wedding cake. People say it tastes good, so we'll see!

Eh. Its likely to be my last cake anyway...got a job at a nice bakery today!!!!!!!!! (go me!)
