Ok as many of you know...I am fairly new to cake decorating....I mean I never had so much trouble until I started allowing perfection to get in the way...Anywho...here is my question....How in the WORLD do you smooth out BC on a round cake?? I have tried every method I know of and here is what happens....You can see the rim of the cake thru the icing...ok so I added more...then I have this big blob and cant get it smooth...LOL... My friend suggested using the water with the spatula....tried that ...I think I am doing something wrong here. If any of you could...Please please help me....lol....TIA
Beth
I can really relate Beth. I much prefer to ice a square cake over a round one.
What I do is boil water in my tea kettle and then when its good and hot pour the hot water in my hubby's thermos he sometimes uses for work and throw my spatula's in there.
When I'm ready to smooth the cake (if I can't use the paper towel smoothing method) I take the spatula, wipe off the water then lightly, in one direction with my cake on a turntable go at it. For me I find the heat of the spatula helps me get much smoother results.
Thanx for your quick response. I can get the side smooth ...it just seems to be the edge on the top...lol...I use the turntable as well and i get to the point where i want to use it as a freesbie and sling it out the door...LOL..I will try the hot spatula thing and see if that helps....TY again....

Joshsmom,
mind if I ask... What is the paper towel method?
I'm new to this site, but not to decorating, and I've never heard of it... Thanks!
I smooth with parchment paper. If I need a sharp edge, I crease the parchment and then use the warmth of my hands to smooth on either side of the crease.
Also, remember that in 95% of cakes, you'll be adding a border that will cover the upper edge of the cake.

You use a viva paper towel (for the smooth look), lay it over your cake and lightly rub over it with your hand or a fondant smoother. You have to use a crusting icing to use this method.
Crusting icing = an icing that dries with a slight crust, where you can touch it with your finger and it doesn't stick to your finger.
