How is this cake constructed?

I am making a circus cake and would like to duplicate the effect of this cake by using the styrofoam balls covered in fondant. I have tried to contact this C.C. member several times to get some info but have not heard back from her.

I understand that the dowels go through the cake and then styro balls covered in fondant, but I need a little more detail. Do you cover the bottoms of the cake boards nice because it will show?

And more importantly, what keeps the cake from caving in on the side without the balls?

Has anyone ever constructed a cake like this? Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
Teresa

Have you seen the globe pillars from Wilton? This is probably what I would use there. You can cover them with fondant, and they already have holes in them.

Also you would have pillars/dowels on the other side holding the cake up.
