I think it is ugly... at least they could have done the fillings with a little more precision.
yeah i can't say i'm a big fan either...whats funny is she probably paid an arm and a leg for it!
If I am gong all out for my wedding, where every single detail has been thought and rethought and I got the best of the best, to make an unfinished cake a part of it is a wasted opportunity, an unfulfilled promise. The cake is the wedding in miniature - it holds the beauty and the love and the care of two people - the little details are the promise that each of them makes to the other - to leave it in its most unfinished expression is like saying - I am not going to put the detail and care that this marriage deserves! I absolutely, completely, definitely hated it. It looks dry, it looks unfinished, it looks like whoever touches is is going to come out with his/her hands smeared with butter. It doesn't say anything meaningful except for: Look, honey, I didn't care and I started this cake an hour ago! Besides the bride and the usual gossip about the guests, the one thing people talk about is the cake and how wonderful it looked/was/tasted. All the other details went the wayside because the conversation after this wedding must have been: OMG! What was she thinking! Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.
The Maisie Fantaisie cake was beautiful. I am inspired now- what if something like that had some beautiful sugar flowers with some curly twigs and a few sugar butterflies perched on it? Even birds and nest? It has some definite decorating possibilities.
I think Maisie Fantaisie's cake is beautiful because a lot of care has been put into measuring each layer. There's a picture in the book with a ruler and a knife right next to it, cutting the layers; and she talks about no sugar-craft techniques required but "structure and precision" so that it all looks even. She cuts 1.5 inch deep layers and then cuts those in half to get the 3/4 inch deep layers.
The Hillary Duff cake even looks burned on the sides on top. I'm probably just a perfectionist but it doesn't even look appetizing to me.
That would be a perfect cake for me! I hate frosting. (I do like working with it.) I always eat 'around' the frosting. Maybe I'll do my b-day cake like this...hmmmmm......
You and my 5-year-old nephew! I never met a kid who doesn't like frosting! He's always asking if someone can take the frosting off, or he won't eat the cake. "Can I have it plain?" is is favorite question when it comes to cake.
I guess I still think that if I were the bride and I didn't like frosting, I would have to think about my guests feelings about frosting too? What if they all like frosting and now they're going to be deprived?

My mother thought that was the ugliest cake she has ever seen. She kept telling me about the cake having no frosting on the side and looking unfinished and now I see what she was talking about. Wouldn't that dry out the sides? Hope she didn't pay an arm and a leg for that one.
this requires a good baker!! getting all the cakes to be thi perfect.. or they just cut out all the sides to make it look uniform
well defenerly no cake decorator here.. "i wouldnt mind making this cake it easy "
Yuck. I think it's horrible. I looks burned, the filling is uneven and I think it just looks unfinished and unprofessional. Even the flowers on it just look sad. And I bet she paid a ton for it too.
I don't know. I like that it looks rustic and homemade, but frosting is my favorite part, so I wouldn't take a piece if it was served to me. It looks like it would taste dry. So even though I kinda get what they were going for design-wise and think they pulled it off, it doesn't look appetizing so it's a waste.
Well - It is definitely different! Not bad different, not something I would want, but if she was happy, that's all that matters!
Actually, I like it. But I think its the flowers that pull the whole presentation together. Without the flowers, I dont think it would appeal to me too much.
I just don't see the point. It looks amateurish to me. I find it ugly and unappealing. Some cake decorator convinced this woman "how hip and cool" this minimalist new design is and most likely charged an obscene amount of money for it. I personally think that this is the "Emperor's new clothes" of the cake world and if this is a new "trend" I QUIT lol!!! JMHO
I just got a request for this cake!!
Bride: "Here is the picture of the cake I want, it is very different. As you can tell, the only frosting on it is in between the layers. Let me know what you think!"
I'm not sure yet what to tell her. I don't even know what I think about it, not that it matters.
So many ways to make this cake look finished. Martha's way, Maisey's, swirled icing, etc... and this was the choice? No, thanks. I don't like the overall look and when I look at it I think, "Pour me a big glass of milk and leave the jug." I really hope it wasn't as dry as it looks.
Comon people, there is many styles out there, this is the rustic look! like how rusty metal cans, jug, or whatever are actually " in " right now, and those slabs of tree trunks as cake stands instead of polished silver stands...people like different things you just have to look at it differently! Thats the style with the uneven icing, although I have to say it really needs to have the same thickness even if its not clean looking.
I like it XD
It almost looks like they used a 1M or 2D tip to pipe the filling on, thus some gaps.
Yeah, they may save on the decorating costs, but goodness, the florist bill would be huge with all those flowers! lol
I too would be concerned about the cake drying out with no frosting to seal in the moisture.
Looks like Hillary had been to too many weddings where the cake was over the top extravagent/expensive and she wanted to be unique and have a rustic homemade unadorned cake on purpose. I can understand it but yes - don't really like the look myself
While I would never choose this for myself, it is interesting in it's own way. It also shows a lot of skill on the baker's part to get 8 perfect rounds from the pan. We all cover up a lot of cake imperfections with icing. These can have zero cracks, tears or discolorations.
Dislike! Its Blah! At least it isnt cupcakes, if I get asked to do anymore cupcakes I'm gonna scream!!
Oh I love it. Weddings for me are all about the theme, and if I close my eyes and imagine a pastry desert table next to it, with glazed marble bunt cakes, dessert croissants, big fluffy muffins, and home style donuts... Okay granted I'm imagining it all with my stomach...I'm very hungry! Throw in a nice rustic vineyard type feel and I'm all for it!
I couldn't hate it anymore than I do. I think it is plain awful!
Edited to add that when I saw the title othis thread, and clicked the link, I was expecting it would have icing on it, and I was incredibly disappointed.
