I am making cupcakes for my fiances birthday. And i want to make the fondant disk, then take an edible marker and write on them. I was wondering if you can just use regular fondant to make the disks? Or could I even use royal icing to form the disks?

I would use fondant for a cleaner look that can conform to the cupcake. Royal would be so hard.

thank you!
i don't want to cover the cupcake, i want to icing the cupcake, then lay the disc on top of the icing. and I don't really care about being able to eat the disc, I can't stand the taste of fondant. so it won't be eaten any way, that is why i don't really care if it is edible or not.

I would use fondant, I made cupcakes out of a fondant disc then put a letter on top (for birthday boy's initial). You could still see the icing.

I was going to recommend fondant also because of the cleanness of the look of it. Good Luck! princess.gif

If you want it to dry very firm, just use gumpaste if you think the discs will all be taken off and not eaten!

Those small discs will dry superfast if 100% gumpaste is used. icon_smile.gif

Make your discs before you start your other cakes. It wont take too long to roll out some fondant, use a cookie cutter, then leave them on the counter for some time while they dry. Fondant will dry out over time, 50/50 fondant gumpaste will dry hard, but not as fast, and pure gumpaste will dry firm fast. Just depends on how fast you can work, and what you want as the out come.
