I can't TELL you how many purple cakes I did this year! I bet I did about 1/3 of everything in a shade of lavender, purple, eggplant, etc. zowie

Lots of coconut cake early in the year, then tons of chocolate and lemon too.

any interesting 'go to' colors this year, or did you all do purple all year too?

Missed everyone, but it's been a hectic summer with barely enough time to breathe, let alone post. Trying to post some of my favorite cakes/pics here today but running into glitch so will add more later...

take care! icon_smile.gif

purple has begun to work its way over here too. Just getting into it though. (we're usually a season behind.)
Right now I'm seeing a lot of grey and yellow with a natural bird theme. Also a lot of greens of all shades, including hunter, which must be making its way back.

We are still stuck on white cakes with black and teal.

Damask patterns! Good grief, if I have to do one more of those, I'm going to scream!

I'd love to do more purple cakes. I think I had 2 or 3 all season long with any shades of purple. However, I am doing about 150 cupcakes this weekend though with purple sugar hydrangeas, which is a nice change!

I seemed to get stuck doing different versions of I cake I did 1 1/2 years ago, square with different piping on each tier. One tier will have scrolls, another with a cornelli lace bank and swiss dots on another. Lots of scrolls and quilting. Let me tell you, I am much better at scroll work than I used to be.

I hear ya. I have one that is probably becoming my 'signature' design just because it's so popular. But it's easy for me, and I like it, so it's cool.

I'm so thrilled to be beyond the plain smooth white buttercream with a ribbon wrapped around each tier that seemed to grace my every weekend last year and the year before!
Definitely the squares turned with scroll work and a ribbon were big as usual this year for me.
But, I definitely had some clients really stepping it up and allowing me to create something unique for them. Lots of cakes with green, yellow and black this year (not together...those were just the shades I seemed to be doing alot of). Lots of cakes based on invites and wedding dresses. Seems like they are more detailed...which I LOVE!!
Hoping that trend continues!!

Hmm...not sure if it's just New England conservatism, but for me this was the summer of white bc, pearl border, ribbon around each tier, and either completely smooth or Swiss dot. And flowers. Come on people! I wanna see some color! icon_eek.gificon_lol.gif

Ugh, I get so tired of that. I think that people were trying to save money, and all the magazines tell them that the more decoration, the more expensive it is.

I did a lot of purple, too, and a lot of turquoise. That was a Pantone color of the year, though, so that explains why. Here's what they're predicting for Spring 2011 http://www.pantone.com/pages/Pantone/Pantone.aspx?pg=20752&ca=4

I get a lot of these too...with ribbon along the bottom in either some shade of purple, black or that damm davids bridal watermelon!

Here in Florida our wedding season is picking up...we have a huge October wedding surge every year, I mean I have 6 weddings cakes every week from now untill Halloween. Most popular definetly the square offset with the scroll work and quilting, and tons of sugar calla lillies in all colors, I even had to make them in forest fgreen.

I'm foreseeing rich tones coming in to play soon-
Burgundy, Cream, Chocolate, and gold (not the goldy yellow, the actual metal). Yes, these are fall colors, but I think they are coming down the pipeline for most seasons. But that's just a prediction.

I'm thinking gold is going to be the new silver very soon. And matte fondant vrs shimmer.

Thanks Cosumeczar for the pantone colors. That is very helpful! I'm doing a lot of those colors right now, so they are definitely right on!

It's funny, I also saw another swatch from somewhere that was showing colors that were very 1973-- lots of burnt umber and darker colors. Kind of depressing, and I hope that they don't get popular!

yep, that's exactly it. I tend to think of those colors as "rich"

I'm doing a wedding show this weekend that will feature one of my cakes in the "wedding tent" (basically an entire wedding setup for brides to see), and they are doing apple green and azure blue (blue with a gold shimmer).

And then doing some cupcakes for place settings in a planner's booth and they are doing pumpkin, cranberry and an arabian print.
Going to be some interesting color combos out there, I tell ya!

BTW- I HATE PURPLE! Don't know why, but I do!

Heh heh, purple...Yes, there has been a lot of purple.

I can't remember who had the swatch that I saw, but these colors weren't the rich ones, they were pretty grayed out and depressing. I doubt that they'd be popular for weddings, they were all pretty gross. I'll see if I can find a link somewhere. I like the rich fall colors, but these weren't those!

yes, grey has been in, so I can see where the some colors would be "grayed out." Yuck.

At least when they use those dark colors on cake we know there's going to be a lot of fondant going on!

Heh heh...I couldn't find it, but I did find about five or six totally different
"forecasts" for 2011. There are a lot of pastelly greyish colors, though, so look forward to that.

Trends that I have noticed were lots of fuschia this summer, and lots of clients wanting a smaller cutting cake with cupcakes on the tiered stands below. I've had about 4 or 5 of those combinations lately, with more to come!

This was only my first official wedding season and it wasn't large, but I did several with the swiss dots. Almost all of them have ribbons around the bottoms. I'm not really a fan of either one of those things now. I did have a grey wedding cake. And a couple of "champagne colored ones. Actually, several of my cakes had color and weren't just white, which was nice.

did anyone else feel like there were alot of Owl cakes this year? Owls were very 'in' here lol Other trends that I noticed was the damask patterns and of course a huge rise in popularity for cuppies icon_biggrin.gif

I didn't see any owls, that's a new one for me. But I want to banish damask to the ends of the earth,. It's everywhere on every wedding site, drives me nuts.

I didn't see much purple this summer, people wanted objects like Rum Bottles, Hermit Crabs, and Mahi-Mahi.

Edna De La Cruz posted a beautiful wedding cake on her facebook page. It was done in coper, patina, and gold. I've seen a lot of gold popping up lately, and warm autumn colors. That's sits well with me, I love the warm colors of fall!
