Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone has found any vidoes online that show how to stencil on fondant - specifically on the vertical sides of a cake?
I'm interested in something that shows the consistency of icing beign used (and speaking of icing, is buttercream or royal better for this application?, and can you make your own stencils or do you have to buy them?)
I can only go by what I was taught...
First, you can either used a precut stencil or make your own. Blank sheets are sold at many of the craft stores.
I was taught to use royal, smear it on...carefully so the stencil doesn't move and lift off even more careful.
thanks for responding... I've seen many 'finished' cakes using Royal or Buttercream and they look great! I'm trying to figure out how to do it and also compare it to using fondant/gumpaste to decorate instead (using a Cricut to cut out the stencil pattern and then add it the cake)... I'd like to try both to see which I prefer/is easier/cleaner for me... wondering which method others prefer?
I just wanted to add this since it's about stenciling. I have yet to try any kind of stenciling myself. But one pic that I have saved is a cake stenciled with luster dust. There might be more here but kathyw made a beautiful one (called Calla Lilies and Damask).

I have always used medium thickness royal icing on fondant. I have used my own stencils and purchased ones and I always clean the stencil each time between use. Other wise there is a chance for mistakes. I have also used tape to mask off part of the stencil if I want to get a clean edge. Be careful when spreading the royal icing so it does not bleed underneath the stencils. For me this works best if I dot it on over the edges of the stencil before removing excess. I hope that this helps.

that link doesn't work ;( I even found the article in the Articles list but it still won't work ;(
Strange...I found that link in my bookmarked sites and tested it to make sure it worked. Then I tested it again after I posted it here and it worked. Now the page seems to have disappeared.
the link to the picture of the stenciled cake works but the link to the video doesn't work - well at least not for me.. I just tried again and it comes up with a blank page... no errors or anythign just a completely white blank page.. odd...
When I click on the link in my post it brings me to a page that has a picture of a stenciled cake, and below that are two actual videos (not links) that you can click play on.
It's a shame it's not working for you, because they're really helpful videos.
very odd... the page fully loads but nothing - just blank white ;(
I'll try from another PC....
Weird... tried on 4 computers. Blank page comes up.
Here's two links I have.

Is this the link you're using? Works on my computer at home, two computers at work and my laptop. Anyone else?

Maybe if you clear your cache.
okay just went to anther PC and it works! Yippy! thanks everyone! not sure why it doesn't work on mine ;(
okay so now that I've seen the video I have a question.... if the stencil is only long enough to go 1/3 or 1/2 way around the cake (on the vertical side) how do you keep going around the cake - what I mean is that the stencils have areas on the sides that are solid so if you try to position the stencil next to the area that you just did would it not smudge it?
I have my first stenciled cake for this weekend so of course I watched the video. I plan to cut the stencil down when I get along in the design.
No sure but that makes sense to me.
thanks for the info and the links! I also ran across one that shows how to use luster dust that now want to try :
looks great!
my only concern is that if I do this BEFORE I add the fondant to the cake it will get smudged if I'm trying to do a nice tight drape... so i'll have to try it on an already draped cake on the sides - this is similar to one of the tutorials here on CC! and I love the color used!!!
